Met up with a bunch of great guys at SPSP this past weekend for a self rescue practice session, meet and greet, along with some fishing. I hope to have my kayak fully rigged soon with pictures to follow…
Poor Rockfish. The Chespeake Bay stock of schoolie rockfish is currently plagued by mycobacteriosis, a bacterial disease that occurs among striped bass, and now, other fish as well. This year, I haven’t caught as many stripers with sores as last year, but it’s obviously still a great concern. The otherside of the fish pictured was even worse. Here is some more info on Myco from the Maryland DNR website.
Mike and I fished Sandy Point in what started like a glass pond, quickly turned into some pretty rough conditions! I’ll tell you one thing, if I werent in a Hobie, I dont think I could have been fishing towards the end of our day. The current was ripping through with some crazy chop. Saturday, 6.27.09, my opening day of live lining for Rockfish. Didn’t turn out to be a great opener considering I forgot to charge the battery for my livewell and radio, had my line snap on my first cast, and then not take any more pictures b/c I was mad at my line. I’d still do it again though…
Mike and I hit up the bay bridge once again on Sunday May 9th. Seems like the big rock’s are really thining out from the boat chatter we were listening to. non the less, we’ll keep trying. GS picked up some of those new parachutes from alltackle that have the mylar in the skirts and we gave them a whirl trolling. GS trolled them in tandem and i did one solo and a a lighter non mylar tandem rig. my mylar didnt get any hits, while the trusty tandem got 3 dinks from 17-20″. It did pay off for GS as he landed a nice clean 34″. The last 2 hours we were out, the tide was ripping out..sure did get me tired…lol
Mike and I finally got to get the kayaks wet for the second time ths year. We launched from Hemmingways on the eastern shore and set out to troll the the Bay Bridge. Because of the MSSA Tourney, there were quite a number of boats fishing, despite the rain. Within an hour, we had already had a couple dinks landed, trolling tandem rigs. Mike had a 30″ plus fish, but the main line snapped at the swivel right next to the boat. Tie a better knot next time!! I ended up with a 24″, 29″ and 2 14″ dinks that hit while my lines where up, literally on the surface, 5 feet away from my boat, on my way back in. Got a few sweet pics that I hope to put up soon on paddles and fins gallery.
So Kelly, her dad, his friend Larry, and I entered the boatyard bar and grill rockfish tournament for opening day. Lines wet by 7ish and not a hit until about noon, when a reel on the rocket launcher started screaming…at first I thought it was a snag or loose drag as I didnt have much hope for us, but when I picked up the rod, I felt that sweet, sweet tug. Tried to let Kelly reel her in but since she was sleeping, she was pretty out of it, and I brought her in. 34.75″ and a fat 20lbs about 100yards south of the bay bridge on the east side. Not even close to place in the tournament, the winner was a 48.5″ caught under the bay bridge, but we had a great day~
