Diving Planers

[Yak Fish]

I talked to a few guys at the swap meet and I'd like to pose the question to the board....Does anyone use diving planers, diving sinkers or trolling divers (they go by several names). They'd be used instead of a lot of weight to get the lures or rigs down to depth. I've seen a few brands one of them called a jet diver. I also just saw one called a Bud's diver which not only gets the lures deep but also out to the side. I wonder if they work and if so, I wonder if they'd work on a kayak. They do look pretty sweet as advertised.

I bought one this past fall. I have not used it yet. I use crankbaits almost all the time while trolling. The deep diving cranks work for me. I don't like alot of lead between me and the lure. I used to use crankbaits even when I had my center console boat. If your using a peddle kayak they may work. I use an electric motor, because I troll most of the time for stripers. I would not want to paddle and use a planer.

I love it. Gets the bait down without the heavy weight. Adjustable by the amount of line you have out. I am looking forward to using it more accurately this year since I have a line counter reel now.

I just watched the video. That looks interesting, especially for someone who likes to troll numerous baits simultaneously like you do. I like the way it gets the baits out to the side. Just seems like a lot of guesswork to maintain accuracy...especially if you don't have a line counter.

I found them online for $24.99 each. I like that because of its ability to have lateral separation.

looks like they would work great on a boat which is constantly in motion. what happens when you get a fish on and stop to fight? have fun with that tangle good for EKs not for paddler or peddler

Ya don't have to stop with a motorized Hobie ........... and besides ........ they are REALLY spread out and at different depths and angles

What size Seastriker did you get, MM?

Anyone tried all three? Would like comparison: Bud's diver, Dipsy Diver and Seastriker.

Has anyone caught anything on any diver?

Would you drag a crankbait (to get it deeper) or just soft plastic?

how'd i miss this whole thread??? for my purpose, i'm kind of thinking of something to pull more to the side, than down to troll 'on the way' if i have a long pedal, or if i'm just exploring a new place.

i think i'm going to try one side planer, and run a line straight off the yak to pull a couple crankbaits and get some spread. for me, this or another luhr jensen product looks like it may do it

i would like the planing force to disengage (the way a sea striker does), the planer to float, and not be heavy, and not flip over. oh yeah - and offer enough resistance to hook a fish. i'm going to check BPS next time i get the chance.

I had that exact experience MM- I had a hit on the stretch 25 crank bait with a 29 inch rockfish and I just didn't worry about anything but landing the fish- After landing the striper I reeled in the other rod and reset the planer and 6 inch swim shad by resuming my trolling pattern. After several hits exclusively on the crank bait- i switched out both rods to stretch 25's- and put the planer away.

What size Seastriker did you get, MM?

I got the size 2. The only time I trolled it was during the MKF tournament...and we all know he the fishing went on that day lol.
