  • Eastern Shore Ponds

At this time of year most of us are chomping at the bit to fish from our kayaks. The weather often works against us, teasing us with one good day followed by a return to rain, wind and cold. However, we are heading into April and May when the Chesapeake and its tributaries become excellent targets and the weather improves. For fresh water enthusiasts, the Eastern Shore ponds also light up.

This is a chart I’ve used for a presentation to the FSFFers to highlight that good freshwater fishing is relatively close:

They are destinations I’ve enjoyed. Each has ample parking and easy access to the water via a ramp, or in some cases you can use open shoreline to enter the water.

Yes, they require a little drive but before the summer beach rush, the routes to the Eastern Shore are flat, fast and uncrowded. I enjoy the drive. And I enjoy the fishing when I get to the above ponds.

The above list is by no means complete. They are the ponds I’ve had success in. There are others, especially in DE. No permits required, aside from a MD or DE license. And my non-resident DE annual license costs less than my MD tidal and freshwater license. It’s well worth the price.

So, a little hop across the bridge provides access to excellent freshwater action, especially in the two months that lie ahead. Think about it.
