  • John Veil to Speak at Free State Fly Fishers Meeting on January 2, 2019.

I'm very pleased to announce that John Veil will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of the Free State Fly Fishers on January 2, 2019 at 7:00 p.m.

As regulars to this forum know, John is an excellent kayak angler and his presentation will be especially interesting to Snaggedline members.

Here is a summary of his talk from the Free State Fly Fishers website:

"Local angler, FSFF member and fishing book author John Veil will speak about the concept of a fishing comfort zone. The talk will describe what is meant by a comfort zone, how to determine your own fishing comfort zone (this will be different for each person), with more detail on how his own fishing comfort zone has evolved over 30 years of fishing. Veil fishes light and ultralight spinning tackle from his fishing kayaks and his shallow-water center console flats boat. He targets tidal species in the Severn River and the mid Chesapeake Bay and freshwater species in Eastern Shore ponds and creeks. He also spends more than 25 days a year fishing in shallow areas around Tampa Bay. The presentation describes some of the techniques he uses to target fish in these areas."

Our meeting site and clubhouse location is 3789 Queen Anne Bridge Rd., Davidsonville, MD 21035

    Please join us.

I look forward to seeing you there.

I appreciate Mark's invitation to talk to the FSFF group. I look forward to speaking to them and to trying out a new talk for 2019. I put over 100 photos of fish, tackle, and scenery in the presentation.

I will talk about the ways I like to fish and the equipment I use as well as some fishing approaches I have tried and discovered that I did not like as well. I will have samples of many of the lures I use in case you want to see the types of tackle I use.

One of the take-away benefits from the talk is that I will show some photos of places where I target fish. I would not post such photos or identify locations on a public chat board, but am willing to give away more details when speaking in person.

              Thanks John.

              That's encouraging.

If I may interject, John and I have taken a similar approach with the AACC kayak fishing course we will jointly teach in March.

We want folks to be successful on the water. We fully appreciate that where to fish and when is a key element in finding that success.

Really, there are few “secrets” for long-term, avid kayak fishermen...it is the casual, once in a while, recreational fisherman who finds our words of wisdom as nuggets of gold...and I fully support promoting our sport...we enjoy it, why deny anyone the same enjoyment? It is true that there are locations, small ponds and streams that cannot support much fishing pressure, but as a whole, the migratory nature of fish that populate the Chesapeake Bay minimize such considerations...

That said...the guys I fish with are all avid, experienced master Anglers...and while I am an old guy, I learn new tricks from them every season I have the privledged of being on planet Earth...we can always learn something...no one know everything about anything.

                  John,

Thanks a bunch for your talk last night.

                  An excellent presentation:

                  To a large, eager-to-learn group:

You showed through good humor, superb photos, and undeniable logic that kayaks, light tackle angling and fly fishing mesh nicely together.

                  Outstanding job!
