You always hear horror stories about kayaks melting in the sun...passed this guy leaving my neighborhood downtown this morning. And he had a parking ticket. That kayak has gone to the big lake in the sky.Melted Kayalk.jpg PS- can someone tell me how to rotate photos, I'm shambles over here with the sideways pics haha

I know the dicks sporting goods specials can have his problem. They are made of mdpe not hdpe. I left one out in my yard one time and could easly push the deck down and dent the sides. Poor guy. Maybe we will see if on craigslist [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

I don't worry about my kayaks melting in the heat during transport. However, if I stop for any length of time during a trip in hot weather, say for lunch, and if my van is parked in the sun, I will release the tension on the straps holding my kayak on my roof rack. I do the same if I pre-load my boat the night before a trip. I don't think it's wise to keep a kayak strapped down under tension for lengthy periods in hot weather and perhaps that contributed the condition of the kayak pictured in this thread.
Some expansion will take place in the hull in the heat and you should give it room to grow a little to avoid distorting its shape. You just have to remember to re-tighten the straps before proceeding.
On the road in summer, I rely on the rushing air during travel to cool the hull enough to avoid distortions from the tightened straps. No problems thus far...Mark

Ocean Kayaks will deform if left on a cartop in the sun. Ask me how I know.
That said, it is easy to correct small deformities by using a heat gun. The one in the picture would probably need to go back into the mold.John
