  • Spriggs Farm report: Perches plus

I noticed that Spriggs Farm was open again after being locked down due to conditions from the high water in July.

I was poking around the piers from 0800-1200 on Aug 26. It was pretty fun, and nice water. Very calm, and the water clarity was not bad- probably a couple feet. I turned left from the put-in, and got on my first fish as soon as I cast to the end of the riprap there.

I caught two young stripers (12-15 in.) almost immediately on a small dark spinner. Shortly after that, between the first two piers, I got a bite from something huge that refused to come off the bottom. It was the same two-inch spinner, on 6-lb line and light tackle. The bite wandered around at will, and I just followed. We went under two piers, and I finally started to bring it up enough to see. It was a catfish that had to be ten pounds. I had a snagged-tackle mishap trying to get my net in hand, so I was never really ready for it- when I got it to the water line, it broke off and got away.

After that it was plenty of perch and a couple fingerling stripers. Tackle was mostly spinners, a couple on a dark curly tail grub, and a couple on a beetle spinner.
