I had no confirmed plans to fish today. I was a little under the weather yesterday and decided to take it easy. The weather was predicted to be breezy with winds 10 to 15 mph with a temperature of 49 degrees. It rained Friday and Saturday night. Allot of the local waterways was reported to be murky or muddy, further aiding to my decision to stay home and rest and take care of some paper work..... Then came John aka SurfDog. He called me around 9:30am and want to go shore fishing. He was persuasive and talked me into going with him .....I will say it was not very difficult for him to talk me into going. So I quickly got me gear and headed out of the house by 10:20am to meet John at Anglers. I left my car at Anglers and John and I carpooled across the Bay Bridge to Bait shop near Hillsboro. I bought us some bait and weighted bobbers that John wanted to try. The bait shop was out of grass shrimp. We then headed into Carolina County and stopped at a park on the water that we located the last time that we visited this area. It was too hard to fish there. It was expose to the wind and my bobber and bottom fishing rig kept coming back to me. The water seemed shallow in this area too. After trying to get a nibble for 30 minutes, John and I decided to ahead to Hillsboro and fish from shore there. At this area we had better luck. We both got our March FISH! John pulled in the first fish with a bobber tipped with a live minnow. Soon after that my line began to dive down, It ended up being a 13 7/8 inch yellow perch. The darn thing was strong and took my minnow on a bottom fishing rig. Since I got no bites with my second rod with a bobber, I converted it to a second bottom fishing rig with two shad darts tipped with minnows. Bam, I caught more yellow perch. John also went with a top and bottom rig setup and he was nailing yellow perch also. I found them in a channel in the middle of the river. In the short time that we stayed there we must have caught over 30 fish between the two of us. John did not want any fish, but I decided to take some home. Between John and I, I was able to take 12 keepers home. We had 3 fish that was 10 inches. All of the rest of the fish measured between 11.5 and 12 inches, plus the whopper that I caught. We packed it up around 3:30pm and headed home. We tried to see if the biggest yellow perch was a citation, but the Hillsboro bait shop that we bought the minnow from closed at 2pm. We tried Anglers, but they said that they do not have anymore citation forms. They mentioned that Maryland was doing something different, which I must look into.
When I got home I decided to fillet all of the yellow perch. I noticed that when I cut open the belly of the large perch that I caught, that it had a crayfish in it's stomach. Very cool.
As you can see, it was a great unexpected day of fishing, and I want to thank John for getting my butt out of the house today.
