CHSP Flounder 6-22-2013

Today I fished with AbuMasgouf, Toyomo, and Yakkinfish 18...it was an absolute pleasure. We have been meaning to hook up for a while and it finally happened. Nothing but laughter and friendly chats all day long!

This was my first time fishing CHSP and my first time launching off a beach. It felt like summer vacation with the sand between my toes. We started fishing during the very last of the incoming tide and finished with the outgoing tide. Low tide was extremely low!! I heard chatter on the radio that it had a lot to do with the moon last night....being the closest of the year. Returning to the launch and getting to the parking lot was a struggle, I am really out of shape, lol.

We all caught fish, productive in the morning and slow in the afternoon. I caught my first flounder, dogfish, and toadfish...lots of firsts for me today! Yakkinfish18 caught a starfish and earned the nickname all day long. We all found keeper flounder eventually and a few croaker to add to the stringer. AbuMasgouf and Toyomo had success with live minnows. Rob and I were producing with bucktails and gulb 4" swimming mullets. White and chartreuse were equally enjoyed by the flounder. We fished the pier for the majority of the time....we made a trip to the inner wall but the action was slow.

Beautiful day of fishing. By no means my best fishing day in terms of results but seemed like weather was perfect, water was calm and being amongst good people doing what we love I couldn't have asked for more. The day started off with everyone hooking up multiple times with keepers except for me...wasn't sure what I was doing differently but I just wasn't getting any strikes. Finally broke the skunk with a 14" weakfish...switched to minnows and eventually started catching the right species. Had a couple shorties and a couple croaker, and then finally after Yakkinfish18 and Sparky1423 were done for the day and I was ready to call it quits myself, Abu Masgouf told me he was getting multiple hits in a certain spot and pushed me to try a little longer. After losing the last minnow I threw on a white gulp and jigged like I had been doing all day, except this time I got a hard hit and reeled in a 17" exactly on the mark keeper flounder. So its as if the whole day of effort finally paid off. I take it over to Abu Masgouf who has the cooler and he tells me " drop it in but be careful you don't lose it." keep in mind his little cooler is practically filled to the rim. I turn my net upside down get him in and guess what? He flops and makes one bounce on the kayak then straight back into the water! LOL! All I can do is laugh. I still feel like mission accomplished even though I blew it at least I "caught" a keeper flounder. It just wasn't meant to be that fish's last day on this earth lol.

So overall a great experience regardless of hiccups. I would love to come back here again and definitely for tog when season opens up again. Sparky and Yakkin it was great fishing with you guys I hope to fish with you guys again in the future. Wish I got more and better pics but my phone stayed in the drybox during most of this trip. I did get this shot of the fishing pier with people literally elbow to elbow. Good reminder of why I am so glad I got a kayak.

Phenomenal time with phenomenal company! This was also my first time to CHSP and its a beautiful place that is worth multiple visits. Toyomo and I arrived the night before to scope out the area and see what reports are coming out from the tackle shop. Most people catching flounder on gulp and minnows. That's where we also learned that flounder size limit was recently changed to 17". We thought about night fishing that night but had insane traffic coming in because of the concert and were exhausted from a 6 hour car ride that was only supposed to be 2 (from Elkton).

Sparky1423 described it well so I'll just sum up my side. Water temperature averaged about 69 degrees.

I first tried the 3/4 oz buck tail bottom and 3/0 bait keeper hook top both with 4" gulp mullet all chartreuse, including the buck tail. This is the same set-up John Skinner on Youtube used. I had some hits but no hook-ups. I switched to a 1oz buck tail because I couldn't feel the bottom like I wanted to (still learning all this stuff). I caught a toad fish and a small flounder with that set-up. While I was doing that, I dropped a top and bottom rig with cooked salad shrimp for croaker. Surprisingly I only managed two... It was slow for Toyomo and I so he suggested the minnows. I'm glad he did because not only did it turn up the fishing but it also turned it into those nice lounge sessions on the kayak with the minnows doing all the work LOL! That's about when I hooked up with my first keeper flounder at 17" followed by a couple of shorts. I had two set-ups. A top and bottom rig with two minnows on flicker snelled 3/0 hooks. The other set-up was a home made 3 way swivel with a 3/0 flicker flounder snelled hook. Both had 2oz weights.

Like Sparky said all our action was in and around the old pilings from the pier. My action picked up significantly when I went to the first sets of pilings right after the broken pier. Armed with the minnows I drifted slowly in there and kept bumping between the piling and hooked up with a 17.5". After that I hooked up with 5 more, with one keeper at 19".

It was one of those days filled with awesome memories of firsts. It was an absolute pleasure fishing with Sparky1423, Yakkinfish18, and of course Toyomo. I look forward to having future outings with those guys, because it was great laughs all around!

On a side note, I know I said I'd like to Masgouf every species I catch at least once, but I'm a little perplexed with the flounder LOL! Toyomo said it best, "How do you Masgouf something that was already created Masgoufed with both eyes on the same side??" LOL!!! ...looks like I may just fillet these

Potato and parmesan encrusted with shrimp in a boursin cream sauce and fresh spinach. This is a good one for orange roughy too...not for the health diet!

BTW, did you guys sense any difference between live bait, plastic and Gulp in terms of flounder preference?

When the water was moving, the artificial produced well. I caught more flounder on gulp swimming mullet than I did on a strike king twister tail grub (same color and size). This was my first time catching consistently with gulp and I was impressed with the beating it took. I never had to replace bait, unless I lost the rig.

Toyomo and Abumasgouf purchased minnows during the slack when everything came to a stop. I caught absolutely nothing during the slow period, at the same time the minnows were catching fish. Not great quality fish, but fish none the less. All boaters close by were using minnows and fluke rigs. In the early morning I met up with two younger boys on a jon boat paddling. They were absolutely crushing them with gulp and a jig head, but I current was still coming in nicely.

In the end, I would have to admit the minnows would do better than artificial. I stuck it out jigging plastics, missed a few more flounder and caught a few croaker. I enjoyed jigging the plastics and would keep the same game plan next time.
