On 11/15, I drove down to Rudee Inlet to meet a friend and see if we could find some specks. Heard reports of people catching some nice ones in there lately. Even when I was launching, a guy I talked to said it was pretty good the two days prior. With high hopes, we fished for about 3 or 4 hours on the incoming tide. Tried some vudu shrimp, the usual gulp, and assorted hard baits. Both of us got Skunked. So we head over to HRBT to try for some stripers. From about 8:30 to midnight, I landed 9 schoolies, but only two over 18" (just a little over), 4 flounder, and 1 oyster toad. My friend left to drive back to Richmond at midnight after catching a few schoolies with one keeper at 21". But I was determined to catch a bigger striper, so I stayed even though it was slack tide. Ended up catching two more small schoolies and found the bigger one at 25".
11/16--Fished HRBT in the morning for a couple hours. 2 small stripers and 1 keeper at 21". Took a nap in the late afternoon and didn't wake up until around 8. Headed back to HRBT and fished 9-12. Landed 5 stripers with one keeper at around 21".
11/17--Slept in and cooked a huge breakfast for my brother and myself (Steak, bacon, eggs, and even some grilled boneless chicken thighs with buffalo wing sauce). Went over to launch from Great Bridge Locks Park and fished a few hours on mostly low tide. Caught 3 small specks and had one bigger one on the line, but it shook the hook before I could land it. Found an area that looked promising with tons of bait jumping and some bigger fish breaking the surface, but nothing would take what I was throwing. Also caught some other fish I could not identify over there. Only thing that looks like it on the VMRC site is the porgy, maybe it was some type of freshwater fish. After dinner, back over to HRBT yet again. Fished from 8-12. Caught 4 really small stripers. Didn't think I was going to get any keepers and the weather started rolling in with close to 2' waves building on one side of the bridge. Figured that was it and was about to call it a night when my rod got slammed. After a pretty good little fight, I landed a fat, 28" striper. It had about twice the girth of the 25 incher I caught on Friday night. After towing that big guy around on a stringer for a little while with no more bites, I loaded up the truck to drive home to Fairfax in the middle of the night with the excitement of the catch still lingering (nice drive not having to deal with all the jerks camped out in the passing lane holding up traffic, made awesome time). The bigger stripers have definitely move into the HRBT area, can't wait to hit it again soon.
I did not take many pictures this time for some reason.
