  • Susky near Harrisburg, 9-2-14

I fished the Susky near Harrisburg today, Tuesday, 9-2-14, 8:45am-1:00pm. I’ve been waiting very impatiently all winter/summer for the Susky to get back to summer low flow so I could pick up where I left off last fall. Flow finally reached 3.5’ over the Labor Day weekend… time to go fish.

I caught 16 smallmouth. All but 4 were less than 12”. Also caught a couple 14”s. And the last fish of the day was the biggest measuring in at 18”. Hottest lures were a variety of Rapalas and 4” soft plastic minnows fished weightless on the surface.

Sounds like a pretty good day doesn’t it? But last year the majority of my fish on most trips were over 12” with many in the mid-teens. I’m not going to pass judgment on just one trip, especially knowing that the area I fished was pounded hard over the 3-day Labor Day weekend. The action I had this day was a far cry from what I have come to expect based on the previous 2 years of fishing these same waters. We shall see how the next few trips compares to 2012 and 2013.

    Lots of these small smallies.

Don't worry I've caught plenty of 15-18s there this summer.and those little guys will be studs in a couple years.they're actually a good sign as some years classes were missing recently.

Small smallies is better than no smallies! Hopefully the bite picks up as the water cools

        Good work Howard.

An 18 inch smallmouth is an impressive fish.

Thanks guys. Yeah, the little ones will turn into big ones. This morning I quickly reviewed all the Susky@Harrisburg entries in my fishing log for 2012 & 2013. Jeez, I went 27 times! Most of the entries reported I caught only a few smaller than 12", a few reports I caught no small fish at all. So yeah, looks like the Susky has quite a crop of smallmouth coming on line. I've noticed that Susky smallmouth are always very fat, almost obese at times, even the small ones. So growth rates there must be very fast. These little guys will be beasts in just a few years.

Beats me getting skunked on the Potomac on Saturday.
I've never caught a smallie over 18 inches. Beautiful fish.
