I fished the Susky near Harrisburg, Thursday, 9-4-14, 9:00am-2:00pm at a location ~4 miles downriver from where I fished 2 days ago. Decent day of fishing compared to my trip there 2 days ago. Today I caught 12 smbass, of which only 2 were below 12”. The rest ranged from 12” to 19”. Once again all fish were very fat. I missed several hard hits from very nice fish too. All caught mostly on 4” soft plastic minnows fished weightless on the surface. Heavy growths of eel grass in some areas made fishing difficult, so much so that I had to use weedless hooks in these areas… weedless hooks always cost me more missed hits… infuriating to say the least… especially when the missed hits came from big boil fish.
This eel grass I’m talking about has blades that are 2’-3’ long and ¼” wide. Sometimes this grass grows so thick that it forms dense mats on the surface that require more effort to paddle through. As I paddle through these matted areas I’ll see schools of baitfish scattering like roaches. I don’t remember seeing this much eel grass many years ago. I guess this is a good sign for the river. Anyone else see a lot of eel grass in the Susky upriver from Harrisburg? Seems like it’s grows mostly on the west side of the river. Maybe the Juniata River is influencing where the eel grass grows… dunno.
I saw no other fishermen although a couple touring kayakers paddled through the area.
