  • Rocky Gorge - Pike

Fished Rocky Gorge this afternoon from 4PM till 6PM.
    Water very stained.
Put on a fire tiger jointed Shad Rap that dove around 12 feet deep.
Caught a 9 inch yellow perch on it within 15 minutes.

Paddled a ways and fished a rocky point where the main river channel was about 10 feet deep.
Solid strike and I set the hook. The fish stayed down. I knew it wasn't a bass. Heavy, stayed down. When it saw the kayak it made a run and stripped drag.
I saw it was a Northern Pike. As I kept pressure on the fish as it stayed down I searched my tackle bag for my lip grippers. None!
Let the pike get kinda tired. I then pinched it on the back behind the gills.
Unhooked the lure and put it on the hog trough to get a measurement. It was 25 inches.
Started to get my camera out and the fish flipped out of the trough and was gone. So no photograph, so that was a bummer.
But it was great catching my second pike of the year.
Water temp was around 70 degrees.

Talked to a boat and a few kayak fishers and nobody was catching much. So I was happy with my trip given the stained water conditions. The water had cooled off about 8 or 9 degrees since last weekend.

        Congrats on the Pike.
Been wanting to get back out there myself before it gets colder. I'm having bass fishing withdrawal but I'd settle for a pike as well.

Nice job Tom. I was there Saturday and caught a few bass slow rolling spinnerbaits in deep water.

Hope to catch a pike this year like you!

As a member of your Kayak Wars team I am going to have to fine you for forgetting your fish grips!

Congrats on putting another Northern in the boat!

Haha, Dave! Yes, I was so excited to catch the beast. Then utterly demoralized once I realized the fish grips were nowhere to be found!!!! I was amazed I got the thing on the ruler/board. They are almost as much fun as snakeheads, but not quite.
Haha, yes I need all the kayak wars points I can get. Although I'm doing pretty good on the number of species this year.
