  • It's been a while...Occoquan Reg. Park Fishing Report

I haven't been able to go out at all ever since the end of the summer and have been inactive for a while but it sure feels good to be back. I just recently finished with all my college applications and actually just got accepted into George Mason! I still need to hear from the rest but since I had some time off I decided to head out for a quick trip to the Occoquan with my friend on my old 12' canoe. We launched at around 11 and fished the docks until a little before 2.

My friend was used minnows while I used both a red and chartreuse crappie tube tipped with some homemade "Smelly Jelly." I both vertically jigged the tube as well as used it in tandem with a slip bobber. The fish were suspended around 5' to 6' in the water column. We caught a lot of little ones and one small bass, our final count was around 15 (need to count) and while there was only one was a nice slap (measurements to come) the rest were average size. We had loads of fun and they will definitely make a few good sammiches.

I've never tried, nor seen it but I've heard that they can be caught there. I don't think it is very productive however.

Nice work, I may have to check that out again soon. What worked best, minnows or lures?

                    Yes.
They are not big and tough to catch. I used to catch more flathead than YP on YP lures.
