  • Fletchers 5/8

Made it out to Fletchers this morning. The bite was slow. I caught a couple of small hickories, but landed 2 pretty good sized Americans at 19 and 20 inches. I used my shad darts that I tied earlier this year. The first one was caught on a dart with an orange head and orange tail with a chartreuse body. I lost that one a few casts later. The second was caught on the yellow one shown in the separate photo. When I tried my darts with a little larger hook, I got no bites so I stuck mainly with the smaller ones.

WTG, nice sized Americans. This spring will go down as one of the best for American shad (aka: White shad) Fletchers has had in a very long time, MANY years. It's so good this spring that it even made it on the DC TV news. Last weekend, May 2&3, the river nearly exploded with American shad. Reports of 20-30+ caught came from several sources. Ah yes, orange & chartreuse, that's a deadly combo for me too. I don't know how long the Americans will stay there before they return to the sea, it may be just days away. Having so many Americans in the river is new to everyone, so how long they will hang around is anyone's guess. We shall see.

Yes, the water temperature is way up in 70s now, which isn't a good sign. Need some cooler water to keep them around. I hope there is another big pulse, I got out a few times, but not nearly enough. The last couple of years I had been lucky to be out there on very active days. This year, the times I have been, it's not been very active and I've had pretty average to below average days. I heard yesterday was a really disappointing day.
