  • Nanjemoy or Mattawoman?

I will be headed out early Saturday morning for snakehead and was curious as to which anyone would recommend. I understand that Mattawoman gets a ridiculous amount of pressure so I wasn't sure what Nanjemoy is like. I will be in a canoe, so I can get into the back waters that the boats can't get to.

If I go to Mattawoman, I was thinking about launching from the 225 bridge. Would that be smart with an outgoing tide? Will that make paddling too difficult coming back?

As for Nanjemoy, there seems to be a ramp a little up creek and I can paddle right immediately off the ramp and head up creek.

    Anyone have any input?

Regarding Mattawoman, if you are coming back to the kayak launch at the 225 bridge around low tide you will likely have to get out and drag through at couple of spots. Not really a big deal. Just a couple of spots where you likely will not be able to maintain enough forward momentum to punch through (low tide is at 11:34 A.M.). Last time I was at Mattawoman there was a horizontal tree laying over the creek about 70 yards downstream from the bridge. I can go underneath it in my kayak (just need to lay my rods down).

I have only fished Nanjemoy once a few years ago. Was targeting largemouth bass up the creek. Caught zero largemouth but I did get into a bunch of 14" - 17" stripers and a few good sized blue cats on the lures intended for the largemouth.
