  • Mattawoman Creek Catfish

Check out a trip I made to Mattawoman Creek to fish for Blue Catfish for the first time. I don't know why I waited so long to target them. They are really fun to catch.

Yep..and Marshall Hall is a bigger launch with just as good or better catfishing area...what is appealing about Slavins Launch is it is a protected smaller creek...and it has vegetation areas unlike any other...lily pads and spatterdock...snakehead fishing started here...this was the epicenter of the snakehead hysteria when it was widely called a “monster fish “ that would destroy the free world...DNR had great efforts to contain and destroy the fish...allowing nighttime bowfishing with dozens of flat bottomed boats sporting generators and lights so bright it could light up Redskin stadium...but it was too little, too late...love the Creek...beavers, bald eagles, Ospreys, geese, swans and ducks...peaceful, no wake zone above Slavins...great bass fishing, crappie, bluegills and still a fair number of Northern Snakeheads...big blue catfish seem to be a big draw as well, although in my experience Marshall Hall has bigger fish...

I like fishing there because as Ron said, it is protected with a no wake zone above Slavins. Catching big blue catfish is fun, and the scenery from the Slavin's launch is peaceful.

That day in the video was pretty windy. I couldn't imagine what it was look like on the main river. It's nice that you can move to a different location in the creek get out of the wind.

Ron - I'll have to give Marshall Hall a try. It would be cool to go on a blue catfish sleigh ride. I tried for snakehead on my last trip, but only got a blow up. It could have been a bass. I'll be targeting snakehead on my next trip. I may end up going east.

Martin - Thanks for telling me a about the fishing over there. It really is beautiful over there. I saw an osprey catch a fish while I was heading out.

mchottie - I wish I could take my wife there. She won't go for buying another kayak and my boat is too big for that area.

For me, part of what I like about kayak fishing is the fun of trying out new launch locations that you never new existed.
