Upper....someplace in Montgomery County. Accessible by the C & O Canal.

That section of the river looks great to float, and all of the structure "screams" smallmouth. Great pics! Looks like a blast.

Can you run this section solo? I had talked with a guy a while back and he indicated you could paddle back up stream via the C&O Canal. I have some difficulty finding
reliable fishing partners (uncooperative wives, honey do list, leaving too early, fishing too late, driving too far...) so I'm always keeping an eye out for areas that I
        can paddle and fish solo.

        Thanks.

Yes, I fished it solo. Beware, the canal was very low yesterday. So the paddle back to the car might be difficult. I carted my kayak back up the towpath, but usually paddle.

Don’t let the Potomac scare you guys away. If the river is low, almost any launch point from the canal will work for solo trips. Launch, paddle up river. Fish along the way. Float back and fish.

Thank you for reply and the information. I'm going to try and make that trip in the next few weeks.

Nice smallies. That's some beautiful scenery up there. I haven't fish up that way in long time.

                As always, beautiful photos, Tom.

I didn't see a long rod in your kayak but clearly, your jigs worked great.

                Congratulations.

I'd be interested in a trip to that area, might be a good time for me to try fly fishing from the kayak. Haven't taken that step yet.

I thought about it Mark. I'll bring the fly rod next time and use it for a bit. My strategy will be to hop out of the kayak and fly fish from the rocks. The river was slightly higher than I normally like, so the spinning rod was much easier to use while fishing from in the kayak.

Definitely, give it a try. Although this article addresses fly fishing in Chesapeake Tributaries the techniques and even the flies it mentions would apply to river smallies:
