Since the Potomac is reported to be empty of smallies, I drove about an hour and fished another flow that used to have smallies in it.
The water was kinda stained from some storms. I waded around about 2 football fields distance from the parking area. Spooked a few minnows near shore. Didn't see any fish for about an hour.
Eventually saw some fish busting minnows at the surface in a pool near a rock face. The surface activity lasted about 15 minutes. I used the spinning rod and cast topwater and mid-water baits with no luck.
Did manage to have a fish take a swipe at my whopper plopper, but it did not connect.
The weather was so nice I decided to make some trips over the weekend to smaller flows only 5-10 minutes from home. Driving 2 hours for zero fish is no fun.
The local small flows produced lots of these sunfish, but no smallies.
Also caught a largemouth in a spot that a smallie should have been in.
On the positive side the bulging disk in my neck and arm numbness is much improved. Almost totally normal now.
