  • My son caught this one last night on an ultralight rod with a blue fox spinner

My son caught this one on an ultralight rod with a blue fox spinner.

He also caught this northern pike and 3 other species of fish all in about 50 yards of water in the river yesterday evening. I think he fished for about 2 hours. Full moon. Cold front headed into town. Maybe the conditions put on a feeding frenzy? The muskie was about 34 inches long.

I feel as if ultra-light fishing is under-appreciated. Big fish will most certainly hit small lures, and using downsized spinners and jigs tempt many species into biting. Congrats to your son for those nice fish!

Here is an article discussing how low-pressure systems form and how they impact fishing. To quickly sum it up, as a low-pressure system arrives, the barometric pressure decreases, sending fish into a major feeding frenzy.

Two nights ago, I was fishing for white perch off of my dock and as the night went on, the rain came down a tad bit more every 10 minutes or so. But it was big perch after another until my jacket began absorbing water and I called it quits.

Tom -- Nice catches for your son. Small lures and flies can indeed catch big fish. There's a reason experienced anglers often downsize their lures when the bite is tough.

Tim -- That was an interesting article on air pressure and fishing. It's no surprise that creatures which live in a highly pressurized environment would feel even the slightest changes in the weight of the atmosphere on the water that we humans cannot perceive at all.

Impressive catch, especially without a steel leader. I’ve only hooked one in my life, fishing for smallmouth on the Susquehanna using a 4” soft plastic. Had it hooked for maybe 2 seconds before the line sliced like Chef Tony going through a tomato with a Ginsu. Someday.....
