While the water was more off color than normal I suspect what was really throwing off the bite was the dramatic change to the water quality from the mid week flooding. My first two bass came from underneath a floating mat of slop, twigs and all sorts of garbage. We did have one other flurry of activity where the largemouth were chasing bait in the spatterdock on the falling tide. However that flurry came and went in 20-30 minutes (then silence again). One other angler put it best "you had to drop it right on their nose to get them to bite".
