  • Saint Mary's Lake 7/19

The lake is producing large numbers of bass if you are willing to get out at first light. I had 2 dozen plus today in 4 hours and also caught pickerel, a rare catfish, crappie, and I spent the last 45 minutes throwing a small top water to breaking panfish. I was fishing a 4" grub on 1/8 ounce jig head and pumpkin green was the key. Most of the fish were off shore in 7 - 10 feet of water. I don't have a depth finder so I keyed in on breaking carp - the bass were under them ( not quite sure why) and when that died down I moved up the big finger and found fish relating to the middle of it. Wish I could say they were all lunkers, but the biggest was around 14" (if you don't count the catfish).

Went out this morning. Bass action was a little slower but the pickerel were very active. Caught one that went 3 1/2 to 4 pounds - certainly the biggest one I've ever caught. Also had a nice 11" yellow perch.

This is a state park And has a very nice boat ramp and parking area. $3 honor system to park - ramp is free. The entrance is off route 5 between Leonardtown and Great Mills road.
