  • Upper Patapsco Report - No Smallies

Waded the Upper Patapsco River yesterday evening. Fished from 6:30PM until 8:00PM.
Water was crystal clear, low, and felt cool.
Had the river all to myself.
The couple of places I normally catch fish, didn't seem to have anything going on.
Ended up catching 3 rock bass and zero smallies. Two came on a blue fox spinner and one came on a 1/8 ounce jig with a curly tail grub.
The river seemed to have an abundance of small snails all over the place.
    No minnows or crayfish seen.
Seemed to be fewer fish around than in past years.
    Forgot my camera at home.

I dropped my Daughter and her BF off for a float on the Antietam. He told me the same story, the smallies where not biting but he was getting slammed by Fallfish. I, personally, am ready for hunting season as small mouth fishing has been the worse in years every time I go out. Talking with bass boat guys and its all the same. "We caught some, but most are under 12"
"If you can't have fun doing it, it ain't worth doing." ... or you're just doing it wrong.

I spooked a few larger fish last weekend in Seneca Breaks on the Potomac.
I enjoyed fishing the Monocacy two weeks ago. Plenty of small fish in there it seems.
The upper Patapsco used to have a lot of fish in it, so maybe all the flooding messed things up.
I'll keep at it and hopefully eventually catch some smallies over 15 inches.

I feel the freshwater fishing in general here in Md has been tough. I caught more fish in a day in cape cod wading in a pond I had no knowledge of than I have here boats and kayaks.

Never posted this up but finally caught a few nice ones last weekend at Dam 5 with Greg. Probably a 14 and a 15 in the very heaviest water up behind ledges. Threw a craw in there and let the current have it, when it stopped I jigged it to pop it over ledges, or ended up setting the hook on them.

Most others places where still slow and smaller fish. No picture, because I forgot my measuring board and it was raining harder than it has ever rained on me fishing, ever! No way I was pulling my iPhone out of the dry box. The air was cold, the rain was cold and I had to beach the kayak to wade in the river to stay warm.
