  • Otters and Snakeheads

Went out on Friday snakehead fishing. Got on the water at 5 AM. Caught a 13 inch bass at 6 AM on the ZMan Snakehead Crosseyez swim jig with white diezel minnow. I eventually got to a spot where there was a lot of snakehead activity. One snakehead completely ripped off my Snakehead Outlawz Slayer Rat, super disappointing because I was really enjoying that lure. I tied on a live target mouse and started casting. I got it dangling on a downed phrag and as I was wondering if today would be the day I get one to bite on the dangle he struck, set the hook too early and lost him. Kept casting the mouse and finally got one about 7 AM, 26 inches, 4 lbs 14 oz. He destroyed the mouse completely and I tied on a Spro Frog. I then noticed fish more off the shoreline so started throwing the swim jig again, where I picked off a 29 inch 6 lb 3 oz snakehead. Sometime before or after that fish I actually lost a fish on the swim jig, which is the first time that has happened with me with that lure, spitting the hook when he came out of water. Then another snakehead completely missed the Spro frog, didn’t seem big though. Then I kept on moving to the next spot, where I encountered 3 otters along the way! The one was NOT happy with me and started chuffing at me so I backed up and got more into the middle of river. Then I caught a 15.5 inch bass on swim jig. Moved to a new spot where I ran across a fry ball guarded by a HUGE snakehead in pads. I got him to take the Spro Frog, and I thought I gave him enough time to set the hook but he backflipped and spit my frog, hook was all backwards. I never saw him again and that lost still haunts me. My plan to find shade in forested areas was thwarted by ghost forests, can’t believe how much became ghost forest in a year. I saw another snakehead in said ghost Forest but spooked him since I didn’t spot him til last second. After that I had no bites. Good day overall but I need to work on my mistakes. I’ll get that dragon sometime this year hopefully.

6lbs is a great fish and 2 snakes + 2 bass is not a bad day at all, I've done far worse out there. Nice work

We should do a snaggedline snakehead outing!

I rarely go anymore due to fishing buddy's having kids.

Must say that 26-inch and 4 lbs 14 oz snakehead was quite the catch!
