Homemade rod floats can be made with using pipe insulation and velcro (link). Cheap and easily adjusted with scissors. The rubber band trick cited above works to hold them in place (thanks!). The velcro does grab braid. I just release it. I have found that spinning rods have more trouble with this line grabbing than do baitcasters.

Another strip of velcro can also be used to make an attachment point for a rod leash. I put them on the butt of the rod but they easily could be located closer to the reel as in Frogsauce's link above.

I use both leashes and floats but the floats haven't been tested yet.

This guy's approach for making rod leashes works great (link). And it's economical. The reversing trick does make a huge difference.

I used 1/2" pipe insulation and zip ties. Not the prettiest, but they work.
