  • Anchor management

For the last two seasons I was always frustrated when dealing with my anchor. It was a PITA to dig out of the crate, unravel the entire line from around the anchor itself, then wind it back around the anchor when I was done.

I looked around for anchor management options and combined a few things I saw.

For $10 on Amazon you can get a retractable cloths line. I pulled all but a few inches of the line out, cut it, and attached the anchor line with thread and heat shrink. I think the housing held either 45' or 49' of the coated clothes line. Unfortunately the anchor line that came with my ACK anchor was significantly thicker and I think only got around 30' on there, even after the lengthy process of removing the core from the rope. I'm hoping this anchor line retains less water, otherwise I would have just put thinner paracord on to get more length.

To keep the anchor quickly accessible no matter what else is in my crate, I bolted in a piece of 3" PVC. The 3lb anchor is a perfect fit. To make returning the anchor just a little bit easier I carved out the inside edge of the PVC to give a tapered entry.

These two options still left me with the dilemma of getting the anchor line through the anchor trolley ring. The solution was leaving a carabiner moving freely along the anchor line. I can quickly attach the carabiner to the trolley when in use and have it completely out of the way and 100% removeable with the crate without threading the line through the trolley and reattaching to the anchor.

That's a good idea with the pvc pipe. I am going to use that. I did the same setup, but kept the clothes-line. I figured, it is meant to hold wet clothes, it will probably hold my kayak in place as well.

I thought about keeping the original line, not really sure why I decided to put the extra work into it. I will say though that stripping the core out of a 50' piece of rope was not worth the 5' or so extra line I fit into the housing.

The one thing I haven't quite figured out is float usage in case I need to cut the line. I've never anchored anywhere that I've worried about boat traffic or current but that added safety without losing the anchor would be nice. Floating anchor line would be the only solution I guess.
