GoPro VS Wasabi Batteries - a little test

What the heck?
I put all my batteries and cameras out on my truck bed at 05:00AM since it is a cold day. This is because I found that on some cold days, some SLA batteries (for FF) and Olympus Stylus Camera didn't operate all day a few times. The Olympus cameras was used as underwater cameras in winter. All batteries have been fully charged:

4 SLA 7 ah batteries:

• GS brand battery (top charge date: June, 2006)
• GS brand battery (top charge Date: Sep, 2011)
• Other not-so-good batteries (top charge date: 2013 or after)

2 Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 Cameras:

• 1 Olympus camera battery (LI50B)
• 1 Wasabi

1 Gopro Hero 4

• 1 GoPro battery (AHDBT-401)
• 1 used Wasabi

Here are non-scientific results for batteries for GoPro Hero4 and Olympus Stylus Tough 8010:
When air temp was 8 -12F,

• Both Olympus and Wasabi batteries didn't work for Olympus Stylus 8010. They worked about 20 seconds. Then displayed the blinking light for batteries didn't have juice left.
• For GOPro Hero 4, The Wasabi battery still worked while the GoPro battery started displaying the battery was out of juice in 3o seconds.

When the air temp was 12F,

• both GoPro and Wasabi batteries worked.
• I didn't test Olympus.

BTW, I've been using Wasabi Chargers for years. One Wasabi charger (Olympus) broke in 3-4 years.

So the moral to this test is don't video fishing when temps are 8-12 degrees F, OR don't go fishing at 8-12 degrees F, or at 8-12 degree F temps home is a lot warmer. I really like the water temp and air temp combo of 120 degrees F, that is more my speed. Great info.

It's freaking cold. So not going fishing made me do some house chores.

I found yesterday and today that the spiral light bulbs in my garage was dim for a long time.

Anyway, I noticed in the past that some of my 12 V 7 ah SLA batteries had stopped working within 4-7 hours in cold day while fishing. This was more obvious when using FF with down Vu (SI). It looked that the additional SI or DV draws more AMP than the regular sonar. The Garmin 301 DV stopped working at 8.5 V. The operation voltage is stated 10-20V. The voltage on the Garmin dropped by 0.1V roughly every one hour from 13.0 to 12.0V. And it dropped by 0.1 V roughly every 30-45 minutes from 12.0 to 11.0 V. This was when the air temp was above 20F and with quality batteries.

However, even with the good, quality batteries, when air temp at 8-12 F, the voltage dropped rapidly, about 30 minutes for 0.1 V drop from 13.0 V to 12.0 V. At this rate, I need two batteries on a cold day.

The other thing I learned was that RS batteries outperformed other cheap batteries. The RS battery (12V 7 ah) cost about $29 + $8 for shipping. However they last for a long time and worked fine in air temp 20 F +. The charge date of one of the RS batteries was June, 2006. This batteries is still performing while all new cheaper batteries fail on cold days in 3 years. I think RS batteries will be the better choice for FF comes with DV or SI in addition to sonar.

Cabelas Batteries/Charger combo was the worst. It last a few trips.

What is a RS battery? Is that a brand? How do they compare with cheaper batteries in normal temps? I am having a battery issue now with a battery that is not very old. I think I may have overcharged it.

If you have a new FF with Down Vu or Image scanning capability, I highly recommend this battery. You can buy a matching battery case $9.99 at Wal-Mart at camping or fishing section.

Also I recommend a good battery charger above $20. They last and charge the batteries fully.

Curious if anyone has ever packed a non spillable 12v in the CHECKED luggage? I wanted to bring mine down for camera equipment, but decided against it. When I looked it up on the FAA website, I couldn't find anything. Mostly just stuff about spillable and loose lithium batteries being prohibited.
