  • Kayak Motor Setup built for $300.00 for Hobie Yaks

This idea is all on YouTube, but Coop1486 decided to try it and it works great with a few modifications of his own to put it all together. I have been sick over the last 4 months and have not been able to do any physical activities, including kayaking. . Since I wanted to get on the water, sooner than later, a motor like Coop's would be good insurance on the water when coming back to shore and I am tired. Well, Coop encouraged me to buy one. So I ordered all of the parts at a tune of $300.00 and drove the parts up to Coop's large garage, where he started putting the motor together for me (with minimal assistance from me). His shop was equipped with all the tools to cut and shape the metal shaft among other things. We used the plug that came with the Hobie that goes into your mirage drive well to hold the shaft and the motor. We are currently using a 35 amp hour battery to run the motor that stays in the front hatch. Through hull connectors were installed in the Kayak next to the sailing mast holder. This connector allows you to just plug your kayak up to the battery that is sitting on the inside of your front hatch.
Coop1486 took his motor out for sea tries and it worked great. He was out for 3 hours with just the battery propelling his yak at a good pace. This motor has two speeds and reverse capability. I should be able to get on the water in late April where I would be able to run mine through it's paces. This motor is design to run on low amps and it is light, jut 8 pounds! It is called a Water Snake. All steering is done with your Hobie rudder. Coop did a good job on constructing and modifying my motor to work in my Hobie LE 2016. Please note that the plugs on the 2012 kayaks are different from the 2015/2016. That is why you see a difference on the shaft length of the two motor.

I got to say, that does look SWEET. Nice job. How do you think it would hold up in salt water?

I personally wouldn't want to be on the water for 12 hours.

Great job Coop. I just saw the video on YouTube by KayakDIY. Now we are all motorized. I knew it was just a matter of time. Thanks again for the DIY rinse kit. You did a good job on it too.

cool project! I'm racking my brain to try to figure out a way to not mount it in the mirage drive well. I hate pulling the drive from the well when on the water but there's something intriguing about the low price point here. My dad was able to mount the torqeedo 403 (not evolve) independent of the rudder on the back of the kayak and it's a great design--but obviously at the high cost as well. Allows use of the pedals, motor, and rudder all at the same time and can pull up the motor when not in use. Not sure that's feasible here with the controls being mounted on the motor itself, but still fun to think about.

Was the 3-hr test run done at the high-speed setting?

It was a neat cheap project. For me, it will be used to motor me back to the launch when I am tired at the end of the day, and also for crossing larger bodies of water. I plan to use my Mirage Drive more for the fishing part, since I stop and go a lot and troll slow.
