Standing Bar

I have the Hobie Outback and an Ascend... I can stand and cast from both, but wanted a little more stability and security... Using one inch pvc I put this together today. The forward cant of the rod holders and the front leg hold it fairly firm. I plan to test it out tomorrow....if it performs as I hope, I will sand and paint it, to keep the sun from making it brittle prematurely... About 15-20$ in parts and 30 minutes... Well, I went out last Monday. Got out to the water, unpacked and set up the yak, only to realize I left the support bar....dang it. I am able to stand in the Ascend easily anyway. I had about 10 shots on some gar....missed everyone. With the bar, I would have been able to transition from paddle to bow a lot easier and faster. Funny thing, when paddling through the water...less than a foot deep...five of the suckers are swimming around and under me....as soon as I touch the bow...nowhere to be seen....pick up the paddle to stand and "pole" with it...they all swim by again....Whatever I shoot, I plan on eating...supposedly, once you get them skinned...the meat is good...It seems to be on par with snakehead...white, dense, no strong flavor....I hope to find out this weekend....and use my new set up properly. I will add some hooks to hold the bow upfront....and rig something to put the paddle or pole on quickly....The ascend is wide that it can easily accommodate the extras...the only draw back is the water finds its way inside because of the lack of supports to keep the hatches from dipping down....yet another project to tackle...

Went out with the bar. I added some hooks to the front to hold the bow. I didn't get too much use from it. About 5 paddle strokes from the bank, my paddle broke in half...good times...needless to say, standing and trying to use half a paddle wasn't very efficient. I did use the bar after I had nosed into some plants. I stood patiently waiting for a snakehead to reemerge from a pool with a black bottom...he never came out...After I returned home and used some PVC to make a poling paddle from the broken set, I added some holes and pinned the front support bar in place. Much better. Having the seat that swivels on the Ascend makes it easier to cast to the sides, as the bar blocks the front for casts. All in all, I am pleased with it. A long pole is needed for moving around while standing. Fighting the tide and wind becomes a hassle when either one is strong, but having the ability to move quietly into the skinny water is awesome.

How old is your Ascend? I got mine last year, an FS128T. I've noticed in the last few months of Bass Pro sale papers the new ones have a different set up for the hatches. I wondered if it was because the older ones leaked. I don't stand up in mine but the floor is still "wavy" and there's not much of anyway the front hatch could seal.

I bought it used from a fellow snagged liner. I've never looked at/for the year. I stand a lot on it. There is usually quite a bit of water inside at the end of the day. I either turn it up and drain it, or keep shoving wads of paper towels in to get it out... I'm sure it looks like more than it is. Even if I do not stand, the water bubbling up from the scupper holes and paddle drips will run under the hatch. I will add some bracing, probably pvc support of some type and thoroughly reseal the hatches. It hasn't been problematic or worrisome enough to bother with yet. I've had it for a couple of years now.
