I need to build an off-road kayak cart for when we are at our family's summer cabin that's in the Adirondacks. We are literally in the middle of the park, near Lake George. As such there are some amazing remote lakes and ponds accessible only by foot... Some as close at 1/4 mile from parking... Others 4 miles or more via a trail.
I've built the basic PVC cart using Harbor freight wheels. But my kayak likes to slide off and shift, making it track weird. It's fine for getting it down to the river in front of the cabin. It would really be a PITA on a trail for 4 miles... Not to mention it makes you carry the weight of one end of the kayak since the wheels are at the end of the boat.
I'd really like to build something that uses bicycle wheels mounded in the center line of the boat. I'm thinking something like the MASH stretchers the Army uses. Something like these. They look like they would hold up and could be modified to hold a PVC rod tube someplace to protect those while dealing with forest obstacles. The non military one is sold by LLBean. Any ideas, suggestions or comments?
