For what I spent on both of them, I could have only bought one or the other. I know very few of you guys will ever want something like what I put together, but I shared it anyway. My tanks only make sense if you're planning to have OBA system for the other tasks I mentioned before. For the average kayak fisherman the Coop method is the way to go.

That's the plan

I've got solar power to keep the truck battery topped off, and hot power outlets for charging everything kayak related. Sleeping platform is dialed in, and the last thing I'm going to fabricate is a custom exhaust fan to keep cool. Eventually I'd like to buy a 12V fridge/freezer, but a decent one starts at $600-800 and go way up from there.

I have a small '6pack' style refrigerator that charges via cigarette plug. I'd have to imagine it would take some serious engineering to daisy chain a few of them together, or disassemble to retrofit a larger cooler box.

FYI I have several of the 'Yeti' style roto-moulded coolers. They do hold ice up to 4 days, depending on how many times you open the lid.

FYI I have several of the 'Yeti' style roto-moulded coolers. They do hold ice up to 4 days, depending on how many times you open the lid.

I've thought about the roto-moulded option, but came to the conclusion my relatively cheap marine igloos work just fine and the only real upgrade would be going with no ice at all. That's part of the reason I bought a solar panel setup is to run a 12v fridge 24/7. I've ran the numbers, and my stock battery should power either of these coolers all night, but an upgraded battery definitely will. Also, these will actually freeze something, which would be nice for the trip home. There are several major manufacturers, but quality doesn't come cheap.

The Whynter freezers and Edgestar are the same and entry level 12v setups. Many people like them, and they are probably a great option for most. What has me leaning towards the mid-range stuff is power consumption and efficiency.

This is folding solar panel I mentioned before: 100W Renogy w/controller produces about 5.7amps in full sun. That's enough to run a 12V fridge, charge all my electronics, and still have some extra power to top off the main battery. I wired a waterproof quick connect on the front, so no need to pop the hood and alligator clamp this thing every time. A stock Tacoma has an inverter built-in with a standard 3-prong plug in the bed. I did have to mod my factory wiring to allow me to run that plug hot when the truck is not running. While I made that mod, I also added some more plugs inside the cab for laptops or whatever else I want to plug in.





For the extra power and other lighting accessories I've added, I put in an aux fuse panel with 100A breaker. This photo is old and doesn't have many of the slots filled, but 8/12 are used up now.



The bed is obviously covered with a cap that I added overhead lights, a hatch/tailgate light, and a 12V outlet to. They are a little too bright to be honest, but work well. I've also got a pretty nice cot that fits in the bed of the truck, and a thick sleep pad that doesn't have me missing home. Last year I just slept on the pad laying directly in the bed, but with rain and fishing I noticed things were getting wet. The cot is a new addition that I'm looking forward to. Recently I also added "rock lights", which are basically LEDs that mount under the vehicle to help you see obstacles at night when off-roading. I have no use for that, but I did want some area lighting when parked and thought these were pretty cool/inexpensive ($60 I think). You can even change the color of them to pretty much anything using a smartphone app. Here they are in blue, which was so intense it looks white in the center of the picture.





I've got lots of other odds and ends, but those are the ones related to camping specifically. At some point I'm going to throw practicality out the window, probably already did that, and lift this thing up.

I use something like Coop46, only his is home made and has a larger container with better output pressure. I found out after I bought mine he makes them for others.

I made two similar to Oldbayrunner and Coop1486. One is a small one like Oldbayrunner and the other is a larger one that can hold 7 to 8 gallons of water, plenty for a multi-day trip. The smaller I use for day trips or an single overnight trip.
