  • Rod Repair

As fate would have it I broke a guide on my favorite rod a couple of weeks ago and yesterday my local paper featured a local person who builds custom rods and repairs them as well. Crazy Horse Custom Rods is just south of Prince Frederick. I dropped my rod off tonight and his shop (garage and outbuilding at his house) was impressive. Multiple rod turners and more parts than you can imagine. Cost for a guide repair is $12 plus parts ($3-$9). It’s a side gig for his family (they all work on rods) so expect a couple of weeks turn around.

As someone who is rough on my fishing rods, this is a good contact to have.

Called to let me know the rod was ready. Barely over a week turn around, given the number of rods he was working on I’m impressed. Had 21 boat Rods from Ocean City charter guy ahead of me.

          Mike -

Repairing rod tips is easy -- I do my own or take it to a local tackle shop. But for repairs of guides, handle grips, reel seats, etc., a specialist with the proper equipment is usually a better choice.

It is comforting to have a competent rod repair guy within a reasonable driving distance from your house. I'm glad you found someone in your area. Perhaps we can start a list of recommended rod repair guys located in other parts of the region. Here are two for starters.

          1) Steve Fogle - Backyard Custom Rods - Walkersville, MD, Frederick County, https://www.facebook.com/BackyardCustomRods/. Steve builds great rods and can do repairs.

          2) Wayne Bickford, Crofton, MD, Anne Arundel County, 301-412-4873 (Wayne is the closest guy to me -- he does my rod repair jobs and is prompt and reasonably priced).

Wayne Bickford of Crofton repaired a fly rod handle for me and shortened a handle on a Bass Pro spinning rod to my liking. He also makes custom rods. He was friends with the late Ken Preston of Pasadena who was a very talented rod maker and repairer. Wayne learned much of his craft from Ken. Wayne does excellent work.
