  • Always check a used yak!!!!

So a little while back I picked up a 07 tarpon 160i. The photos of the kayak were great looked like there wasn’t really a scratch on the hull. Even in person everything looked great. It was winter and the kayak had some water in it. I figured no big deal it was probably sitting since fall they get some water inside. Well I quickly gave the guy the cash and went on my way excited to finally get a tarpon 160i. Now I have been looking for this kayak for some time and now that I have the room to store it I figured why not. Well I have taken it out a couple of times just to paddle it and it is great. I take it down today to go for a paddle and there is about a half gallon of water inside...Seemed kinda odd to have that much after only a few weeks. Well sure enough not one but two small cracks in the scuppers! I can’t believe I over looked this on such a old yak. Now, I do have the tools to fix this but had I have seen it before my offer would have been a couple of hundred less. All in all I’m not to bummed out about this....just a word of caution to those who might be picking up a used yak this spring to look at it carefully.

Checking the scuppers on a used kayak is excellent advice.

The boat looks to be in good shape for its age.

You're fortunate to have the tools and knowhow to fix it.

I'll be doing a very similar surgury on Stacey's OB Outback. The crack is vertical along the inside of the integral rod holder. I can't recall if I checked them or not prior to us purchasing it second hand (actually maybe third-hand). We got it for a song, so some minimal TLC is well deserved.
