  • FYI on SonarChart Shading release in the US

    It’s finally happening! I’ve had a lot of people ask me about depth shading for Navionics charts and I’ve got an answer for you. Navionics is releasing an update in May for Hot Maps and Platinum+ charts that will include SonarChart Shading, 3D underwater relief mapping, and updated Sat Overlay images. The update is free to active Hot Maps and Platinum+ subscribers. If you have a unit that is capable of using the advanced features of the Hot Map or Platinum card, the new features will be included in your update. If you have any questions please feel free to email me jlack@navionics.com or check the Navionics website.

    Been using Navionics cards for years, but I'm venturing more towards C-Map max N+ and using the C-map insight Genesis with my Lowrance unit due to not being able to upload my charts to Navionics Freshest data, but this is great news for others with different units. I still bought a Platinum + Chesapeake Bay I posted here for sale... might just keep it now though.

      What issues are you having uploading your charts? If you are sonar logging and upload to the Navionics website, you’re charts will be updated in a couple of weeks.

        Lowrance units record the sonar logs in Sl format not gpx format which uploader requires. Conversion may upload charts but not sonar logs but I have never been able to have freshest data accept any of my uploads. Per the compatability guide;

          Have you tried to export them to gpx format from your FF? https://www.navionics.com/usa/suppor.../export-upload

          I'm not sure of your exact model, but most HDS' follow a very similar procedure.

            No, unfortunately they do not. HDS Gen 1 would export in GPX. HDS Gen 2 starting with software update 3.5, HDS Gen3, HDS Carbon & Ti models do not.....Read the compatibility guide (photo above posted)... Every log file I converted with even with GPX converters Navionics would not accept.

            "Lowrance has changed their software which now excludes depth data when exporting sonar logs in the GPX format. If you purchase a new Lowrance plotter, you can no longer use GPX to upload sonar logs. If you update the software of an older plotter, the same result can happen. Check this page, which is continuously updated. Please contact Lowrance customer service for any questions."

            Given this I record my logs and upload them to C-map insight genesis anyway so It's easier just to use the C-map products made for Lowrance which have shading. Navionics is owned by Garmin, C-map is now owned by Navico (Lowrance).

              I wonder if this boils down to some sort of tiff between Lowrance and Garmin. Wouldn't be the first time a company has removed support for other companies products. Just seems odd that they would get rid of such a commonly used exchange format as GPX.

              Best of luck, but it seems you've already found a workaround that suits your needs.
