  • Lowrance Hook2 5 Triple Shot Finder Mount

Just bought a Lowrance Hook2 5 Tripleshot fish finder for my new native Slayer Propel 12.5. I'm going to mount the fish finder in one of the tracks for the kayak.

I think (just don't remember where) that I saw several complaints about breaking 1" Ram ball mounts on a 5" fish finder over time. Is this a valid concern?

I see a setup with 1" track mount ball all-in-one, or I see where I can buy a 1.5" setup, remove the screw base 1.5" ball, and add a track mount 1.5" ball. This is a bit pricier, but I'd rather do this once only if the extra strength is prudent.

For the rest of the setup, I'm going to use the Lowrance scupper mount kit, and then DIY the power with a 12aH battery as I plan to add a light pole and possibly other lights in the future.

    Thanks,

    Jim

Definitely would go with the bigger size. With all the moving around and bouncing, the bigger arm will support that bigger screen size better. No issues with either of my 1.5 mounts.

Thanks! I thought it might be a better idea too, the more I thought about it - especially if I ever upgrade to a larger unit too.

I had several of the one inch balls break in the radius with my 5 inch Humminbird 798...when I upgraded Lady Luck to the 7 inch Hook2-7 TS I installed the Hrail and Hrail 1.5 ball mount with the large electronics stand...works perfectly...and I also added the 12v10ahr Dakota FePo4 lithium battery to power it. After six months of use, highly recommend...

Still kicking around the battery setup, but the Dakota option is one I’m considering. Torn between doing a strictly kayak setup with 10-12aH, or a multipurpose camping/kayaking setup with something closer to 15-20ah.

How do you like the Hook2 5 Tripleshot? My current FF has finally died and I need a replacement stat. I would prefer the 5 inch model, but am concerned the screen may not be large enough if I want to view the chart, sonar, and sidescan at the same time.

I like it very much. 5” seems to be the perfect size for me, but I usually only view 1 or 2 things at a time, never even tried to do all 3. I usually just run sonar, or sonar and sidescan.

1000% Get the 1.5" ball, not the 1" ball.

+1, this is what I did and am very happy with the 1.5” ball mount setup.

If your looking for 15-20ah then this is the place I recommend.

Five inch is fine in a kayak...but bigger is...well, better...I run a split screen with charts and downscan sonar sharing the top half of the 7 inch screen...the entire bottom half is side scan...when you pair up side scan and downscan the sonar data just jumps out at you...there is no doubt about what you are seeing on the screen...

That's what I concluded as well. I picked up the 7" yesterday and am installing this am.

I decided after owning a high tech Hummingbird 5 inch side scan 798 ciHD SI unit that I wanted something I could plug in and go fishing without having to take a four-year, college-level computer programming degree before you can use the unit with any degree of proficiency...I am sure the Hummingbird unit is all it is advertised if you know how to use its many menu driven settings...just not what my interests are...I like to fish, not screw around all day trying to figure out the settings...so the choice of the Hook2 was a “no brainer” for me- read all the reviews, knew not to get the very base unit, too many dissatisfied reviews, knew from experience that side scan images on a 5 inch screen in bright sun was very difficult to see and figure out what the bottom looks like...so the Hook2-7Total Scan was my choice...a little pricey but it was what I wanted and we can always justify that, can’t we?

Thanks all. I mounted the Hook2 7 using the yak attack mount and it seems to work perfectly. I also purchased the BerleyPro visor but the cutout for where the FF inserts into the back is cut too small, and the pre-drilled holes do not align. Did your visor fit like a glove, or did you have to modify it for it to fit.
