  • Kayak roof rack cradles - heaviest gauge?

What is the heaviest gauge "Cradle Style" roof rack Kayak cradles?

Looking to put 2 sets of kayak cradles on my sons 2003 Xterra,, what is the brand with the heaviest gauge cradles?

I know I may need to fabricate the clamp to fit the Xterras oversized roof rack rails,, but really want a heavy "cradle"

I had a 2010 Xterra and used the Yakima Rail Grab towers with 66" round bars for years and they worked great. I used pool noodles on the bars which looked ridiculous but was cheap, broke the wind noise, let me carry two outbacks face down, and made my SUV easy to find in parking lots. The rear ceiling cargo hooks also make for a great mount point for a rod rack and the back seat oh sh|t handles can be used to make a front support out of a clothes hanger or some other diy creation.

I use the Yakima round bar system plus extender inserts on Subaru Foresters. By extending the inserts 10-12" I can put two kayaks upside down, side by side on the roof (or a kayak and a Yakima sky box. 2 years ago I had to replace my Subaru and the base rack posts don't fit the rails on the newer car. Now I use heavy duty pipe clamps to lash the bars to to the Subaru rails and they aren't going anywhere. I have the old posts and am willing to part with them to anyone interested for a song. They are so useful and now unavailable in that format, that I just couldn't throw them away.

I guess I misunderstood your question about cradles vs bars. I didn’t use cradles and carried my outback face down in Yakima bars bc the Xterra roof rack was narrow. It was fine for one kayak but did rub the air dam and so I put the Yakima bars on and gained some inches.
