  • Hopefully you’ll never need this fix

My 2014 PA is showing the effects of age and usage by a guy named Big Mike. Last year I broke one of the front seat mounts right through the hull. I was able to repair this with a couple of pieces of Metal L bracket and it’s holding up well. This year I’ve developed cracks in both rear seat mounts that hold the seat in the upper position. Because I have fake hips I need the seat elevated, otherwise you could just drop the seat into the low position and bypass the cracks. Here’s a couple close ups of one mount.

The location of the mounts and the odd angles back there don’t allow for my L bracket type solution. But I kept looking at the lower seat position slot and said to myself, man that looks like the exact width of a 2x4 on edge. So I grabbed a spare one I had laying around that just happened to be the length I needed, set it in, and it fit perfect. On edge the height of the 2x4 is only about 1/2” inch lower than the factory brackets, which get pushed out of the way and act as a backstop for the board.

I tried it out today and it worked perfectly. Here’s my super poor mans fix to keeping me from having to spring thousands on a new boat.

Ron suggested something high quality hardwood but I said, “Only pine shall support my behind.”. I seriously doubt any one else will ever need this fix, but if you do I want royalties for giving you a $5 fix.

Nice solution. I enjoy using objects I have around the house to solve kayak problems.
