Sheesh. Didn't know they cost a pretty penny. Of course I've never tried fly fishing. Maybe one day, so I can be a well-rounded and complete fisherman.

How long have you been doing this?

Well ........ Bob Meiser's stuff goes for about $700 built plus the reel ...... he and Mike Kinney are considered the Top ......... I got this 1 for a bunch less and can sell it for more than what I paid ..........

I got into this about 2 1/2 years ago. I was managing a system install in our Seattle Regional office and my contact's husband is into Spey casting and we became good friends. He took me out fishing in the Pugent Sound a couple of times and then invited me to go to a Spey Clave in Idaho. I went and took casting lessons from Mike Kinney and fished Clearwater River ........ sounds good but I'm a rank beginner and haven't Spey cast in over a year and haven't caught a fish yet. Got my first Spey rod from Medicyaker this summer and just picked up a Spey reel recently when this rod came on the market today .......... called my buddy in Seattle to see what he thought ......... He said it was a steal so I jumped on it. This is the kind of rod they use in the surf and from boats. Spey casting is used in places where you don't have room for a back cast and was started in Europe. It's popular on the Wast Coast rivers and Canada and starting to get popular here on the East coast. Check out the You Tube Videos ........... It's really neat to watch I'll post some you tube videos when I get home .....

Very nice she's a beauty. What reel did you get to go with it?

Can you spey cast from a kayak? I guess if you stand up in a stable kayak like the PA it is ok but that's a lot of upper body movement to perform those casts.

Is spey casting different from regular fly rod casting? Why a two handed fly rod? (vs one handed)

tufnick, The spey rod is typically about 12-14ft long compared to a "normal" fly rod which usually tops out at about 9-10ft. Its got a lot more BEEF too it. MemoryMaker, That 10ft TFO 5pc rod is an Ideal spey Rod because its not as long and its more manageable at that length. Not to mention your arms won't tire out as quickly. I just checked out his LINK you posted. WOW!!! Prices are fairly decent. I may just get a RTW or the kit and go from there. Thanks for the link!!

Nice grab for the collection. Spey casting is very popular with the Potomac guys in my area. They drive me crazy because they don't know how to fish, but it does look like a lot of fun. Some know their stuff and do very well from shore. You'll see them at the Fletchers M&G.

Tufnick, I will have a couple nice inexpensive Fly Rods at my table at the Swap Meet if you like to check them out. There will be plenty of room to cast one on the parking lot if you like. If you can't make the Swap Meet, PM me and I can hook you up any time. I work at BassPro and they have some nice starter combo's there as well. You can get started for about $100. Thats Rod Reel, Backing, Line and leader. Flyes are typically about $2 ea. Or you can buy a kit, take a free Flytying class (FREE) also at BassPro. They start next month, February. It can become an ADDICTION if you know what I mean.

Nooooooooooooooo, I can't get addicted again. I'm already obsessed with my baitcasters. But I may still check it out at the Meet.

Spey casting lets you cast without a back cast for tight areas ...... switch rods allow you to either overhead or spey cast (if I understand it correctly .... I'm still a rank beginner) it also almost eliminates the constant false casts of regular fly rods thus saving your body when fishing all day ...... They have Speys in many different weights and many different lines .........It also gives unbelievable distances ....... I've seen 200 - 300 ft casts are made ...... its amazing to watch line on the water pick up and shoot for what seems to be forever from some of these guys ........ my best was about 150 ft w/a 12 ft rod ........... I gotta tell you guys ........ going Spey is like visiting the Matrix ......... it's a whole other world that you never knew existed ........ and complex in lines, reels and rods ...... tackle

Mike ....... my buddy sold me a Tioga 12 by Teton complete w/line that he picked out for the TFO

Okay ....... here ya go ...... just a couple of the vids I promised ...... theres a ton more

Double spey, single spey, snap T, jelly roll, wombat, snake roll, turbo spey,......wow.....such complexity. No wonder many consider it art and philosophy.

You sure can learn a lot from Goran. Thanks for sharing.
