Hey, what's wrong with bananas.......I caught a lot of fish from my banana Outback

There is an old superstition that you should not take bananas out on a fisning trip, bad luck. Charter Captains somtimes ask if you have bananas in your lunch and explain that it is bad luck. It is kind of funny. Years ago, when Fruit of the Loom had bananas in their label, some were even known to cut the label off of underwear, so as to not have any bananas on the boat.

Over two years ago I went on a head boat trip out of Solomons trolling for stripers. We didn't catch anything the first few hours. In the late morning, I walked out to the deck eating a banana. The two other fisherman started making comments about bringing bad luck bananas. They kind of joked about it, but I sensed some seriousness. I thought nothing of it and finished my snack. Five minutes later the mate walked out to the deck and said, "Who brought a banana? I see the peeling in the trash." I shyly admitted I just ate one. Boy, he started seriously making comments about not catching fish because of the banana. The other guys also made comments the rest of day. I thought it was just a joke, but realized they were on the serious side.

Unfortunately, only three fishes were caught during the 7-hour trip and the biggest striper was 19". I caught a 15 incher. During the trip back to shore I kind of felt they sort of thought the banana did it.

I later looked up this thing about fishing and bananas on the internet. Interesting stories about bananas, luck and fishing. As you probably figured out, I never bring bananas on fishing trips anymore. Maybe an apple or whatever, but no banana.

I hooked up the Humminbird 597ci HD DI. It is really nice to have a larger screen. The down imaging should be nice. The display is nice and bright. It gives my old eyes some relief.

I also got a new YakAttack VisiPole II and flags today. I got the regular orange flag and the sock flag, both imprinted with MKF logo. I am going to mount both of them. I also got the 4 LED light. I want to be seen this year. I wanted the brighter light for night fishing. I have a magnetic navisafe light for the bow. I have a regular navisafe white light for interior light for night fishing. The new boat is pretty much rigged out. I am going to DNR this week to register it, and let the fishing begin.

Well, the kayak is pretty much fisnished. I am just waiting for DNR and BYB to iron out some administrative details, so I can register the boat and go out for the first time. YakAttack flags rigged, anchor trolley strung and can't wait to try it out. I just need numbers.

Did DNR make a hassle about the MSO? I kinda had to go back and forth between them (DNR), the retailer, and the manufacturer when I was getting mine registered.

Yes. If you add and electric motor you have to register you kayak in Maryland.

On my first kayak the MSO was sort of a problem, which was ironed out quite easily with some faxing of documents. Now the DNR says that BYB should have registered the kayak because they collected the taxes. However, when I bought the kayak, I did not buy or add the electric motor at that time. So technically, the kayak did not have to be registered. Now that I want to add the electric and register the kayak the sales taxes have already been paid to BYB. Its a matter of taxes. To me I feel I already paid sales taxes, which I did. To DNR, they want the excise tax, relatively the same thing. To me the taxes, wheather sales or excise, all goes to Maryland, and they got their taxes. In the mean time I am not able to get out on the water. Sometimes, I think it would have been best to buy online and not pay the taxes and pay the taxes, when I registered the kayak. That is how I did it with my first kayak. With the Big Game Prowler, I did the same thing as now, with no problem. Like I said earlier, it is just an administrative cluster f#$!. It seems that DNR is just not used to having powerd kayaks. They kind of deal with it as a power boat, where the boat is powered when purchased. However, a kayak generally does not need power. Catch 22!

Well, BYB got me fixed up quickly. Kayak is registered, numbers and sticker on. All the rigging is finished, crate done, controller on and finished the bungee hold downs for the rods. Everything looks real good.

I am thinking about taking a test run tomorrow in the South River, with all of this talk of catching fish. I'll troll around a few bucktails and and maybe some crankbaits. I only have one battery so far, so I think I'll just peddle out to the starting point for trolling. This will be a good test for the run time of the Torqeedo. It will also be my first time using a peddle kayak.

Glad to hear you finally mastered the DNR crap. I've always been convinced that MD MVA has hired the most incompetent people they could find to work the counter. Then when they got much worse the DNR would hire them away.
