  • Opinions on the Elite 4 DSI

Still thinking of purchasing this unit and wondering what everyone thinks of them so far with just the down scan. Also has Anyone used the scupper mount option at the seat scuppers on the outback? Just wondering if it interferes with your seating position. Sitting on the base and wire doesnt sound to comfortable but need to keep the back scuppers open for my cart.

I have the 4x dsi gps ff I like it however it is not at defined as I believed it would be. I have use a wet well and straight duct seal and there was no big difference from what I saw. I like how small it is and would recommend it. Hope that helps.

On my OK Prowler, I have the Hummingbird 570 DI and love it- it is a five inch screen and is monocolor screen that isn't an energy hog- its detail is pretty amazing- a lot more than I expected-

I was going to get the Lowrance DSI but it doesn't provide the traditional view as well as the DSI imaging and (for me ) the DSI imaging seemed to lose some detail. So I was going to get the HDS 5 or 7 so I could get the DSI and the traditional view .......... but Lowrance builds those capabilities into the structure scan box that doesn't fit easily in a Kayak and is not water proof so if you take a wave or spill you will probably eat $600 ......... and you have some very large transducers .......

I'm going with the Hummingbird .... they offer the traditional/dsi and sidescan all in 1 head unit and 1 transducer .......... definitely more Yak friendly .........

Can't understand why Hobie would limit the new PA to a low end Lowrance ......

I just purchased and installed the Lowrance Mark-4 on my outback and tried it out in the Indian River Bay yesterday...what an awesome unit for the money! I, like you, was also looking at the elite 4 dsi but got really hung up on the mounting and the price. The mark 4 at 200 bucks gives you a great black and white FF with excellent clarity due to the LED backlighting PLUS the chart plotting capabilities with inbedded gps. DSI on a yak just isnt worth it in my opinion...on a boat, perhaps. I can't say enough about how helpful the gps feature is. Gives your constant speed and will show your total trip track on the water as well as depth contours on big water bodies and the option to upgrade to bigger chart packages...helpful for efficiently covering big water and not retracing your steps. I am of the mind that less is more on a kayak setup. This setup with a 7 ah battery is perfect for me...with a very simple wet well duct putty seal. I mounted it with a ram mount on the side of the yak to keep the trays clear and the top flush so that I can car mount upside down without any issues.
