  • What is the secret to getting velcro to stay on yak?

I tried cleaning with 90% alcohol but it didn't matter. The velcro ( a brand new package) would not stay on when I tried to remove my first aid kit. Do I have to buy a certain kind of velcro? I was using the regular stuff.

    Thanks,
    John

On many surfaces of OK yaks, the surface isn't exactly smooth...it's a kinda rough texture. Are you trying to adhere it to this rough surface? If so, it will need to be sanded smooth to get a good bond

No, it is smooth as a baby's behind. It is also nice and flat, perfect for mounting a small first aid kit or so I thought.

I know I can glue the velcro down with Goop as I did this in my van. However, it makes it almost permanent!

Yep, lightly roughen the area. You can also use silicone adhesive, which is later removable.

The thing with the plastic used in manufacturing kayaks is that it is not a good plastic for getting anything to glue to it- Goop is as good as anything out there- this stuff is like teflon- nothing sticks to it permanently- that is why I think the ductseal used in our ff transducer mounting works so well- the beeswax base sticks to a clean sooth surface because it is so sticky- ask anyone who has used epoxy or RTV silicone- after a while it just unsticks-

I get it. I'll goop it.

            Thanks,

I read that double sided foam tape actually sticks best to poly....go figure, but that would be worth a try before gooping.

I'll pick some foam tape up and give it a shot. Ya never know.
