Live Lining

In the summer months, I've had huge success live lining spot around structure where rocks are holding. This is the set up I use.

snelled Owner 5/0 bait hooks are my favorite, to 12"-24" 50lb leader, to a size 2 swivel tied with a nail knot. I use size 2 swivels b/c I also use these for surf fishing so they are readily available to me.

To my main line I tie either a quicklink(breakaway clip) or coastlock and use that to attach to the swivel. This allows me to switch to lures quickly if I see breaking fish.

I like to use no weight, unless blue fish are in the area and you need the spot to get down fast.

I hook the spot through the mouth and out between the nostrils. Thats it, then just cast out into the current and wait until you feel the tap, tap tap, boom, set the hook and have fun!

Yes and with these tips you'll catch a 31 inch in the middle of the summer like me!

If you are up under the bridge try to cast between or near the pilings as the blues lurk outside the them waiting on a snack. the rocks hang close to the piling waiting. IF you like blues then hook in behind the dorsal fin.

good tip! in open water, near a baitball, i'll stick a weight on the line to help the spot get below the blues quickly, where the lazy rockfish will wait.

you know whats funny, if i stick the hook in the back, the blue will bite the head off, if i put the hook in the front, they will hit the tail..lol..

I read this post back when I first found this forum... It has proved to be great advice for me. I thought I'd update it with what I've been using.

I use these rods, I really like the way they flex and they set the hook for you (I'm a big ugly stick fan, seems to be a rarity):



I bring a right and a left hand retrieve reel, works well for having one facing on each side in the front that I can reel either with. I really like the Pflueger P66L reel but it's hard to find anymore. The other one is an Abu and works for everything.



These are the materials I use:

4/0 Circle Hooks
40 lb big game leader (it's what I had around from tube and worm rigs)
15 lb Yo-Zuri hybrid flouro carbon (got a good deal on this)
Egg sinkers (usually 1/4 - 3/4 more if the current is really ripping)
Powerpro spools make great leader dispensers
Black Swivels




I keep them ready to go with the swivel so I can snap them on easier on the water.



I've switched to 15 lb big game for the main line because it's really hard to break your line when you get a snag out there with anything more than that for me.

I use fireline as the main line, 50lb big game leader to a 6/0 hook.

you know whats funny, if i stick the hook in the back, the blue will bite the head off, if i put the hook in the front, they will hit the tail..lol..

when that hapens i use assist hooks and add them as stingers. blues can sense those single hooks and eat around them
