  • Cold Weather Gear

I am just looking down the road a bit. What does everyone do for cold weather clothing. I would like to keep fishing after the water cools them. I guess there are two separate issues. Keeping warm just to be comfortable and avoiding hypothermia if you should turtle. I was looking at the kokatat brand stuff but it is way mucho dinero.

Kokatat's website does not do a very good job of explaining which model is best were suited for what we do. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Does anyone have any alternative suggestions about other cold weather gear?

Does anyone have any idea where the kokatat gear could be bought at a discount out of season?

        Pinch,

Aren't you worried about your waders filling up if you turtle?

        Regards,

If you are wearing a Drytop and waders you usually let very little if any water in the for the brief time you are in the water ............. if you are in there for a long long time it might be more of a concern ............ most people agree that the dry suit is the first choice but they are a pain to get off and they are expensive ....... the next best is the dry top and the waders .......... more comfortable and easier to get off ..... cheaper but eventually lets water in ...........

Some will probably disagree ......... been a big debate for a long time ...... every winter Yakers almost come to blows over the issue ......... just go with what you are comforeable with and can afford.

Some fellow on You Tube did a test on wader/dry top. Jumped in the water, and very little water went in while in the water a relatively long time. I too use chest waders and a dry top.

Is there a specific type/brand of waders that you folks use? I must admit, my only experience with waders is with the rubber/canvas type that I used to surf fish in during November and December. In those days we were always careful to not to get too deep or fall as they would fill up rapidly and likely as not, you would be carried out with the current.

Used my Hodgman Weir Stockingfoot chest waders for two years (fall-winter-spring seasons). Waterproof, breathable, and comfortable. No issues. I would buy another pair. Has belt and front zipper. Get a pair with front zipper for those precious moments when you need to relief yourself, especially when you're in the yak.

I am just learning the fine art of peeing while not turtling the yak in 2 foot waves on the Bay, lol!

Thanks for the tip on the waders. Does yours have the built in table? They don't have the model you mentioned anymore.

Not just good prices, great people! Chris and his wife just had a new baby girl so show them some love and order from them!

Oh, and I wear breathable chest waders with layers and a vest style PFD. I will be getting a dry top when finances allow. I like the White River waders, Canyon is the style I think. They are comfortable, don't leak, and around $100.

I would assume that you guys do not use the ones with the boots attached for weight issues? Also, what are some of the models of dry tops used?

I don't because of weight and they are uncomfortable and bulky in the yak. I like the stocking-foot style waders with the neoprene booties built-in. I wear a pair of Crocs over the booties to protect them (and my delicate feet ).
