  • kayak stands or work tables

we've seen may different home made stands throughout the years and i think i may want to build myself one. ive actually just kept mine on the ground in the garage on the same bubble wrap that it was shipped in, ha. think i may upgrade to off the ground.

those of you who have made kayak stands out of pvc or kayak work tables, why did you choose one material or style vs the other and what height did you go with and why?

I made my stand out of PVC because its cheap and easy to work with. I only use the stand when Im working on the yak and dont leave it on it long term, so I dont know how well it would do long term. You can see mine in the thread I just posted about my Tarpon.

I built one I saw that someone else had. PVC. Cheap. Strong. And easy to work with, just like Shady said. I saw someone that used some all thread on the bottom parts to keep it at a certain width. I used two cinch straps. Two reasons: adjustable, in case you are standing or sitting, 2, they come off fast and the stand collapses to an easy to carry unit. Also, straps act as a cradle.

        I will post pics tomorrow.

I was going to go with PVC and build the foldable "X" design that others on this site have built which is quick to assemble and light to carry. But I had a bunch of unused boards in my garage just taking up space so I went with wood.

It took longer to build but I was able add a storage shelf and casters so it could roll. The top deck conforms to the hull and is able to pivot so I can either store my kayak on its side or leave it upright so I can work on it. The kayak sits a little more than waist high. Sometimes I just leave it upright. With the pool noodles as padding I have never seen any warping of the hull.

I posted these pics a while back:

Thats some nice work and design! I'd like to go with something like that but lack the room in the garage. If its not on the stand, it's on the wall. I really like the storage on the bottom.

Mike - that is awesome! Is that MDF? I might have to clean out my garage...

My yak currently either hangs on the wall or sits on folding plastic saw horses. I was thinking about building a couple "v's" to slip over the saw horses to avoid damaging the hull.

That rollable cart is both functional and attractive -- nice job.

For years, I stored my OK Drifter outside under the deck on two raised platforms made of pressure treated wood. They are remnants of my daughter's jungle gym that was dismantled when she outgrew it. I sold my Drifter last week. It's replacement (Malilbu Mini-X) will be stored in the walk-out basement next to my Manta Ray. I no longer need the platforms.

They are a far cry from Mike's cart, but if anyone wants them, you can have them for free. Each of the platforms is is about 30" wide x 58" long x 15" tall. You must come and collect them.
