I keep the cheap clip on my dog leashes lubed with WD-40. So far so good. When they fail I will pony up for some brass ones.

well, paddle leashes are pretty cheap, don't see the need to improvise. I have one of these and works great....and unlike a float, won't drift away from me if I drop it. http://www.amazon.com/Emotion-Univer...s=paddle+leash http://www.ebay.com/itm/Coiled-Leash...item3a7aca7802

I use leashes when I go in bigger waters or when I am using my pricey gear. LOL

Another trick for people wanting to make their own is to use weedwacker line. Cut however long of a piece you want(actually go longer) then put it in boiling water for a couple minutes. When you pull it out wrap it around a broomstick handle and let it cool for a few. BAM! You got the coils like the cell phone charger. Just crimp a loop on both ends and then you can add your velcro or caribiner clip!

These are the pool noodle type flotation devices Allen was talking about. I think they were under ten bucks and easy to switch from rod to rod. Like I said, they do not inhibit the line when casting or reeling in.
