  • Battery Salvage Tip

I recently moved into a townhouse that had both Verizon FiOS and Comcast installed. I went with Comcast, and was left with an obnoxious big ol' fios box on the wall. Landlord said he would take it out for me (and said he was just going to chuck it), but I figured I could do it myself and if I ever went back to FiOS I could save some of the installation cost by keeping the thing. Upon unplugging the AC power cord a loud alarm went off indicating the switch-over to battery power, which happened to be a 12V, 7ah sealed battery tucked inside. I'm not suggesting that this is the most direct route to get a battery for a fish finder or other 12V needs, but if you have any un-needed electronics that might have cause for battery backup there could be something useful inside. I just picked up a second kayak and plan on getting a second FF for it, otherwise I would offer the spare to someone in need. Tight lines.

I guess it's a lead-acid battery. The power strip/protector we have for our computer has a battery back-up and the unit is as heavy as lead. Small sealed 12V lead-acid batteries are sold at any battery store for ~$20.
