  • Prowler trolling motor mount

After watching Langston and Martin with the Crabbing, plus it might come in handy for spring stripers. I had some 2x3 steel channel laying in the shop and cut and welded this. It mounts to the 4 rudder bolts. It works but need a tie in to the top of the stern to stiffen it. I kind of got hung up on how to best do that. I was just going to make a flat plate and use well nuts, but the rudder slot is kind of messing up my thoughts on how to best do it. Looking for thoughts and ideas.

It will be eventually wired in and the control moved to the cockpit.

Looking good thus far. Instead on one flat plate across the stern, could you possibly use two narrower pieces...one along each side of the rudder slot?

I wouldn't use well nuts ......... they have been known to pull out with a lot less weight and pressure. I would use a backer board with the nuts premounted in the board and Yakattack magic bullets to put it in place since it looks inaccessible

It looks great though ......... how will you do the steering?

It was already prefitted with a rudder, so I am going to use the same cables and foot steering. I cut a section of 2x3 channel. I left 5" of the 6" length on the 2" side and a 1" strip on the 3" side. Beat those 1" strips to go down on each side of the rudder channel. I just welded it and it's cooling down now. I will put pics up later It need grinding and paint as this metal is all rusty.

[EDIT] Picture added, ready for paint and then bolting

Yes, not exactly sure how yet. Always looking for advice. Going to take the top off of it like a bassyak. Theirs looks like you can trip the tilt up lever if you hit something but it looks as if, what you hit needs to push up the motor. I could not see a way to pull it up unless you push hard with both feet.

I have to study for work on the weeknights so, this is a couple weekend project. Many cups of hot tea and peace and quiet in the "detached" garage.

Cool!!! It looks great so far!!! Check out http://www.kayakfishingstuff.com/community/ and do a search there... I want to say I saw someone post the schematics on how to extend/move the controls. The board isn't frequented nearly as much as it used to be so questions are sometimes slow to be answered. But they do have a motorized yak sub-forum that can give you some ideas... Word to the wise, Steve K lurks on the board and is more oft then not a jerk when he sees someone building a setup like his. Smdh. Everyone else is cool and very helpful, if nothing more to work Steve's nerves!!!! LOL

Got it painted and had some free time today. I have a rubber mat glued on the front when the motor screws down too so it does not rub the paint off screwing it down.

View of the bracket and motor tightened down

Top of the shaft with 3/4" PVC slip to screw 90 with 3/4 to 1/2 reduction for threads. Then a 1/2 wet location cable connector will go on it after I seal the wires to be like a cable. I also added the two turnbuckles for steering. I cut the head off a 5/16" x 4" carriage bolt and bolted it on the shaft with 5/16" nylon lock nuts and then put the turnbuckles on it. Rudder cables will attach here to steer it.

                  That coming along great.

Have you come up with a solution for the controls in the cockpit yet? It looks like your extending the wiring for the head.

Keep us posted on the project.

You can use 3/4 inch heavy duty bilge hose to cover the wires down to the plug. I did that when repairing a motor of similar design. Also, beware of mounting an electric motor plug direct to the flush areas of the rear deck, unless the hose/wire covering is leak proof. That is why I went with the bilge hose and my own seal around the top of the plug. I burned up two plugs, before modifying the wire covering and seal to the plug. If you use an electric motor plug on the rear deck, also keep dielectric grease on the o-ring. That will help with water getting past the o-ring.

You may want to look at MinnKota for wired remotes and electronics.

                    Nice job.

I am going to put the controls between my legs on the center console. The control switch from inside the trolling motor top does all the speed control. I cut a hatch in already to get access to the center. I have to get wire and I made a knob already. No pictures on this yet. More to follow later. The cold spell may set me back and the garage is detached and without heat.

when i did the setup for my kayak trolling motor on my malibu extreme i put the controls inside a water proof box. I rewired the switch to a waterproof switch on the outside of the box. nice setup though.. I was lucky to work with a fabricating shop tht did business with a company I use to work for and they helped fabricated a nice block of plastic for me that fitted nicely on the rear with the dimensions i gave them same as your design and it fit in the rudder screws...I ran some thin cable wires where the option rudder would run to control the trolling motor. On the shaft I put on a collar around it to turn the trolling motor left/right with the cable wire attached where it would've been used for a rudder. I also used a marine quick disconnect plug for the power from the battery and controller to make launching faster and easier from car to water and vice versa..I dont leave the trolling motor mounted on the kayak during transport its all put on when its on the ground at the launch site..I only used it to get to/from the fihing area cause the battery juice doesnt last that long and getting a bigger battery not an option..if the battery dies its dead weight on a kayak paddling bak in...lol..also I dont know what the watercraft rule is in maryland in texas you have to get the kayak titled and have a visible registration # on th kayak like a boat...
