  • Hobie Sail Attachment

Looks like a fun accessory. Anyone have one or use one on the bay? I heard they recommend the larger rudder and stabilizers.

I use the Hobie sail on my Outback all the time. LOVE IT! Purchase $3 worth of 1.1/4 PVC and make a simple furling device for it- Must have if you plan on fishing as well. The only downside (in my opinion) is that you cant/shouldnt go out in anything over ~12-15mph wind. Anywhere from 5-10mph is a blast!

    Here is my set up

CAUTION- I am already eyeballing either the AI or TI....

If you want sailing only, Get an AI

Tacking is impossible with the sailing rudder and dagger board. I use home-made sails which is a half of the OEM sail.
Hobie (not AI) are not for real sailing...PERIOD.

If you still want to try it. Here are two things you must prepare:

You will be capsized. Learn how to remove the sail, upright the kayak, re-entry and putting he kayak back on the hole.
The most of all,....LEASH yourself to the KAYAK incase you are overboard but the kayak is upright.
Don't fish when the sail is up for a while until you have mastered self-rescue while sailing and fishing at the same time

I have been into fishing while sailing on a Hobie. We will talk
