  • Pliers - Tip Replacement

Without asking me, this fellow took my $50 Rapala aluminum pliers from my tackle bag to tighten up his reel. Not knowing the pliers were designed specifically for removing hooks from fish and not for wrenching down nuts and bolts, he broke the tip.

Anyway, the tips can be removed with an Allen wrench. I tried to find replacement tips on the internet and could not find them. I even tried the Rapala site. Anyone know if replacement tips are available? Where can I order them from? Or maybe the only option is to buy new pliers. Thanks!

This was during the Rudee? I think your SOL. Probably one of those parts they sell to manufacturers in bulk and not singles.

Maybe you could cut off the other side to match and then file down to be smooth?

Yeah, it was the Rudee trip.

I could cut off the other side, but then I would have a short not-so-good hook remover. I rather buy another set of tips and use the old tip as a spare, in case some other dude breaks my pliers again

Have you tried e-mailing Rapala? They might be able to sell it to you directly or put you onto someone who does.

Good idea. I just emailed them. Let's see what happens.

              Hokie,
We chatted on and off while fishing, so I think I was too nice by not being overly excited when he broke it. He didn't offer me anything - no apology, no offer to pay me. I just let it go because I wanted to enjoy fishing.

Went to that ebay site. Those tips/jaws don't look like they'll fit. They look way too short for my pliers.

                  Tufnik -

Sorry about your pliers. If you decide to get another set of the same pliers, do some price checking first. I have what appears to be the same Rapala pliers that I got at Dicks a few years ago. I paid less than $25 at the time. I like them very much. I found that the side-cut line cutters no longer mesh tightly enough to cut braided line. Even though I rinse them after every use, I still have some minor rusting on the steel jaws. They work well for removing hooks or for re-bending spinnerbaits (which I did this afternoon on the water to make it run better).

I am pretty sure those are the rebranded ones that tsunami, hogy, schmid, etc are all selling. I'd check those guys too for the replacements. I have schmid ones and they are the same, not that great if you ask me.
                    Used to fish more.

These are the only ones I found so far. Hope they fit.

I have those pliers. They handled 1 season so far and no rust.

If they dont fit with the hex bolts, would a super glue/epoxy work seeing as though you only use them for hook removal?

Yeah, glue may work, but will probably loosen up with use.

Turns out similar pliers are pretty cheap. Instead of the Schmid replacement tips ($15), I ordered these Calcutta pliers ($20), along with other stuff, so I got free shipping.
