  • Scotty mounts

I am putting additional Scotty mounts on my Frontier. These will be located where I cannot reach through the hatch. So, traditional mounting with a screw and nut cannot be done

I was told that rivets made for this purpose can be used to do this. Two questions I have about the rivets - are they strong enough to hold the mount and whatever the mount will hold? - and - can these rivets make a tight enough mount through a recessed screw hole?

The items that will be on these mounts - rods, fish finder, visipole - none of which I wish to lose due to a less than secure mount.

I installed the round flush mounts where I couldn't access the underside by using a DIY backing plate and screws. It worked out great, not only will it allow you to screw it on, but also gives added strength. I followed the step by step on this page:

The only thing I did different was instead of using flange nuts on the backing plate and tapping them in with a hammer, I used pronged tee nuts, put them on the screws, heated them up with a propane torch and tightened them down so they melted into the backing plate. This also makes sure the holes are lined up.

I used rivets to install my scotty bases for my camera mounts. Granted the camera is light weight, but they work just fine. I also used rivets to install my side carry handles. My kayak is not light (around 70lbs)...I can hold my kayak in the air via one handle.

I haven't had to try this, but what about using a very small concrete anchor? Some expand, some "T", etc. might be worth a walk through the fastener isle at HD.

Interesting concept, but if you can't get a wrench in there, how did you get your backing plate in? Oversized hole?

Check out the video at that link. Very interesting. You send the backing plate in via string through the hatch. I am definitely going to give this a try! Thank you rwh for posting the link!

It might take me a while to do, not being all that adept at working with electric saws, but I am definitely going to give it a go.

Zeebyrd, I have rigging bullets from installing mighty mounts at the two mount locations in the back of the Frontier. I'm not sure if they would work with the Scotty backing plate, but it made for an easy install of the mighty mount. You are welcome to try them.

Guess I should have watched the video BEFORE I replied.

I must be honest, I was hesitant about installing the flush mounts by myself, because I'm not the best with tools. I stared at the video I linked above at least 10 times over the coarse of a month then I got the guts and went for it, and it was really easy and I am totally pleased with the results. Those things are mounted solid. You can see in the pics above that they aren't as nice and clean cut like the ones in the video. I think I had a jig saw blade that was too coarse and dull and it melted the cutting board more than cut it, but I just left it as is because it's under the gunnel and out of sight. I also found it helpful to number the holes for reference to make sure that everything stayed lined up just right. I think it is a good method. I just like the backing plate idea for peace of mind that any extra weight / pullage on the rocket launchers or rod holders won't be on the 4 fastener points alone.

I posted pictures of the end results earlier: http://www.snaggedline.com/showthrea...d-kayaks/page5

If you do decide to use rivets, get the tri-grip rivets. They expand like a drywall screw and have a rubber gasket under the head: http://www.yak-gear.com/shop/Tri-Grip-Rivet-Kit.

You can also give Luther at Yak attack a call and he will make up a set of backer plates that can be used with the rigging bullets.
