  • New to kayak fishing and new to Annapolis

    Hello,

Im new to the area, kayak fishing, and Snaggedline. I just purchased a Jackson Cuda 14, and look forward to taking it out and fishing. I currently live in Arnold Md and was wondering about places to go fishing. Is there any groups that go out? What kind of tackel are you using?

Thanks for any help you can give me!

    Chris

Welcome to Snaggedline and to Annapolis. There are a bunch of good launches around Annapolis. the Perch fishing should really start to heat up soon in Weems and Spa Creeks. You can also launch at Jonas Green and explore a lot of the tributaries off the severn.

Thank you so much for this information. What tackle are you using for the perch?

Once they come in the creeks in full force, I use a micro spinner bait with a twister tail grub on the hook.

Tackle wise, if you're a live bait guy like yours truly, go to Angler's on Rt. 50 about a mile or two west of the Bay Bridge (western shore side), and chat them up. They sell a two foot micro-lite rod reel combo for $13.99, and it's my favorite rod.

Rig wise, you'll catch the most fish with a tandem bottom rig; sinker on the bottom, with two plain or spinner baits about a foot apart. Razor clams are excellent perch bait, as are grass shrimp. Fish under the piers where there are drop-offs, around the tide change +- an hour or two, and you'll catch plenty of fish. As Matt says, the water temps need to be about 70 - 75 and above before they are back in full force.

Perchin should be heating up soon I prefer using blood worms for bait and spinners like roostertails for lures if you look at the forum there are a lot of different kinds of fishing in the area and it seems sombody is hitting something different all the time and most dont mind having company

              Welcome aboard Chris!

This Saturday is one of our monthly meet and greets. You are more than welcome to join the escapades. Looks like perch are the target fish and will be launching near Deale, Maryland. Check it out in the main forum.

If you're in Arnold you should be able to get out in the Magothy as well...no 'designated' launch sites (that I know of). But there are a ton of Marinas on the river...just go talk to them/ask.

                      1. Welcome!

                      2. I'm just up the road in Severna Park. Unfortunately, my trips are few and far between right now or I'd be happy to show you around. Depending on your availability we might be able to work something out.

                      3. I'm not a bait guy, so I stick to small inline spinners. Typically 1/4 oz in red or white.

I believe there is a park off of Magothy Bridge Road you can launch from.

That would be great!!! I have been getting my kayak ready for the last couple days, and hungry to get out. I off of work on Sundays and Mondays, however going out of town next week. I am trying to get out today and was thinking to launch just off my neighborhood. Any suggestions on what I should use lures? Should I jig the bottom? I live across from Dobbis Island.

It it were me, and I was not looking to keep what I caught, I would do some trolling along the ends of piers for rockfish. Medium weight rod with a 4-6" crankbait or a large(ish) jighead (1/4 or 3/8 oz) with a bass assassin or shad tail. I'm not sure that you are going to see many perch just yet. At least not in the quantity that you will see in another few weeks. You might also find a pickerel or two hiding in the shallows around structure back up in the creeks. That said, I'd take an ultralight and some inline spinners. Again, I'm not a bait guy so I don't really know what to tell you to try if that's your thing.

Have a great time exploring and let us know how you do!

Welcome to the board! Weem's has always been kind to me when I first started fishing in the Annapolis area. White Perch and Rockfish work their way through there. I like to work the shoreline with a bettle spin with gulp as the trailer, Rooster Tails, and other small spinner type baits. They are really fun on light tackle! It's really protected back there so you can get your sea legs under you without much worry about conditions getting bad. I wouldn't recommend keeping any fish out of there though, there was a sewage spill in there not too long ago...

Once you're ready to hit a bigger body of water, Jonas Green state park has a nice launch and there is some structure you can work. There is an old railroad bridge that is submerged as well as the old portion of the old bridge in front of what is now the pier. I have had really good success jigging up WP and Stripers there. You'll want to have a FF to see the structure because they hold really tight to it.
